I think my biggest complaint about the German voice acting is that a lot of times they don't sound very invested -- it's more like they are narrating instead of acting. Like let's take the Thief 2 archer fight where you can really hear the anger and irritation in the guards voices in the original. For example, the guard lowering his voice at "...or we'll boil his knackers" makes it sound far more menacing and the switching his voice to a higher pitch at "Such slander will not be tolerated..." goes a long way to show how upset and outraged he is, as well as at "You've gone... you've gone too far this time...".

I loved that scene. :cheeky:
I never even bothered to play Thief in German. Most games suffer from the German synchro. It's gotten a bit better in games these days though. Skyrim is perfectly fine in German, for example. For other games like Fallout New Vegas, I definitely prefer to play them in English, because, there's a lot of atmosphere added with the accents.

I am not German (in the way that my native language is not Deutsch). I actually have bought long ago a German-CD, but I could not play it (after having played the game in English first). Sorry, but when you got used to Stephen Russell's magnificent Garrett-tone, it doesn't matter how better are the other voices... the magic is gone.
The synchronization is a double edge sword. Even when there's something fortunate like Norbert Lange doing John Nettles, there are still the situations when I watch a nature documentary and I find myself asking "what the heck is Inspector Barnaby doing in Okawango delta?" Or in Roadrunner cartoons :). And the counterexamples are countless - I am watching now the reruns of TNG on Tele5 and let's be honest, half of Picard's charm, brought by Patrick Stewart's voice, is gone. Ersatzlos.
For the "middle" area, probably it's a matter of habit. Having seen Two and a Half Men mostly here, I could not stand Charles Sheen's voice when I happened to stumble upon original episodes (perceived it high pitched and slightly annyoing). It's not bad per se, but I was used to German synchronisation...

My location says the Netherlands but I was born and raised in Germany so it's my native language of course. I have never played Thief in German. I always play my games in either English or in very rare occasions that the original game's language is German or even Dutch; in these languages. Risen, Gothic and Enderal are examples of games that I do not play in English for that reason.

Well yeah I listened to Gothic and Risen english versions and boy, these have bad voice acting. I didn´t expect them to be close to the originals, but that they are that bad... :erm:

I usually only play and watch stuff in their original languages, be it games, animes or series. BUT Thief is a huge exception. The german voice actors of Garrett (both - thief 1 & 2) are the best of the best imo. While the voice actor of thief 1 was a bit unexperienced and sometimes didn´t pronounce things that well, his voice is soooo good that it totally makes up for it: (

the way he pronounces his sarcastic statements is way too good:cheeky:
The german voice actor of thief 2´s Garrett has a great voice aswell, he sounds older than in thief 1, which fits perfectly and its easily to recognize that he knows how to pronounce stuff the way it should be.
Then I gotta say I also love Garrett´s english voice. It´s so cool that he voices him in all 3 thief games (not counting the 4th one, which is non-existent in my world cause it´s utter crap) and I´m also a fan of dishonored´s corvo attano, which he voices aswell in game 2 :)
So for me: Thief 1 & 2 in german, thief 3 in english. All perfect :p

thief 3 in english.
It´s not that we have much of a choice...subtitles aren´t a real localisation for me. :nono:
I heard the german version of Thief 2014 recently and that´s really a joke as the rest of the game...sounds like a bad Direct-to-DVD flick.

True. I mean.. if there was a german version of it, I´d probably play that one :p
I had no idea a german version does exist. Not that I care much. I´ve played through it one time and then deleted everything of it from my mind cause it was just so bad :'D
