It literally does, though. It makes him a much more well-rounded character and even adds weight to the idea of an ostracized eccentric who messes around with his machines all day. This is some heavy stuff, no joke about it.

Guess I'm one of the few who enjoys the German version more than the English one. When I first heard the guards in English (especially in the Angelwatch mission) I felt like someone was squeezing their throats while talking. And their fight sounded so much more energetic in the German version.

Huh, I never knew how the German version sounded. Pretty good voice acting there.
But the guard's voice breaking on "You've gone... You've gone too far this time" still sounds much more funny :D
I skipped a bit forward to hear how Karras sounds like, and he seems much less charismatic. Most of his personality was in that specific, recognizable voice.

I only play Thief in German or French but I have the English SND.CRF for FM development and heard some voices ... sorry but I prefer the German voices. :D
Well, the german dubbing in general doesn't seem to be bad:

BTW I remember that some day I read about the series "The Persuaders!" (Die 2) starring Tony Curtis and Roger Moore (RIP!) which was not that popular in anglo-saxon countries but a big success in German speaking countries ... because of the German synchronisation which was peppy and funny. :)

I like both, the German and English version. Some lines I prefer in English, sometimes I really enjoy the German mumbling of the guards. I have to say, however, that I thought the demo version of The life of the party had a much better voice acting in German. Especially the archer beef, but also the conversation in Angelwatch.

When I was first introduced to Thief 1 & 2 through my older brother around 20 years ago it was the german version. I watched him play. A few years later I played Thief 2 myself and it was also the german version. But at some point when I moved to my second flat I think I lost my CDs. Can't figure out where I have them... So I bought the Steam version of Thief 2 + Thief Gold - and it's english. First it felt really different and I missed Garretts german voice who did a great job. Also the german guard conversations and reactions but I got used to the english version quickly and now I like the english version even more than the german version. :thumb:
@ Shadowdancer: I agree, the archer beef in The life of the party is better in german.

Here from Germany, too. First hour Thief player, still having my original "Dark Project - der Meisterdieb"-CD(although very scuffed LOL).
Regarding the localisation, for the first game, IMO the german version is better, maybe out of nostalgia, maybe also because some voices I like better.
While the original version is also good I don´t like the fact that they had only a limited number of voice actors and Russell voiced several ones. While he did a good job for Garrett, some others sound strange.
The german "Benny" voice(although Benny was not voiced by that VA) sounds much better IMO and I like the sly tone of the original german Garrett VA.
For T2, well...IMO a mixed bag. I like the VA of Karras and Truart way more. As Karras is voiced by the same guy who voices John Malkovich in movies I always had him in mind as evil genius. But hearing the original version...why again Russell? It sounds silly to me.
And while I like Torsten Michaelis he is no real fit for Garrett. I don´t know why they did not hire Andreas Brucker again...maybe someone Eidos had a fetish for Michaelis as he also voiced some of the Hitman games(and is no for that, too) from that time.
For the normal NPCs, well, the VA are ok, but some of the translations are so wrong(e.g. the two female mechanists in the entrance area of Kidnap, the 2nd one says something that can be translated as "f... you" as goodbye), Benny was not voiced by the bassy sounding guy, the intonation often does not fit the conversations...one plus side is the soundtrack in "Framed".
What I also like is the snobbish sounding noble(the Rothschild guy) in the german dub. Sounds way more funny.
Still, I was disappointed that Deadly Shadows had no german dubbing at all.

Karras may be an evil genius, but first and foremost he's a really sad nerd who makes himself little robot friends in his image to praise him. And Stephen Russell's character actually does sound like someone who people would make fun of behind his back.
