I'm about to start this one up but I'm in the middle of many others. Anyone have an estimate on how many hours this game will take to finish? I usually try to find most of the secrets in a game (i.e. I'm not planning on rushing through so take that into consideration in your estimate(s)). Thanks. I'm very interested in playing it after all the praise I've heard and after being astounded at the quality of Thief Gold. Hope it isn't too dated like Ultima IV (which is good but I'll be damned if I can force myself to stare at it for longer than a few minutes).

I think it could take as much as 2 weeks playing off and on, but still trying to find all the secrets. I played it in half the time because I knew all the plots and side quests, already.
It is a smaller game than the sequel, by the way. Try UW2 if you can, also.
I liked Ultima IV, too. I tried playing it on my old C-64, once because of the music included, but it was just too slow on that machine. Too bad there wasn't good music with the PC release.

But is this two weeks of a few hours a day after work or two weeks of ALL day long?

Or any music. I know, it's rough. I can tell there's a deep and interesting game in there behind the hideous graphics and blips and bleeps coming out of my built-in computer speaker, but it's a chore to find it. Especially when you've got a million other more recent games, many of which are arguably as good, demanding your attention. (e.g. Fallouts, Baldur's Gate, Thiefs, System Shocks, Torment, etc.)

Yeah, *sniff sniff*, the good old days were magical. Where you had to wait hours to have that game loaded from tape. Or the times when you had to change diskette every tenth second.
But anyway, about Ultima IV, wasn't there an upgraded version made (for the PC) by a third party, which upgraded certain aspects of the game (music, graphics and etc...)? Does anyone know where to find it?

Yeah, I played the version you're talking about. I finished it, too. I liked the updated music, but there is no substituting the original.
Here's a link to Micro Dragon's discontinued site: (

There are plenty of other things, there besides the sound patch for Ultima IV.
