Hey, I have been researching this question, specifically kawasaki's Vulcan 500 and cannot find an anwser. Does anyone know, on average, how many miles you can get on a motorcycle before it starts to have serious problems? Any links would be great too, Thanks!

Not to be oversensitive or anything, but could you have chosen a worse time to ask this?

UGUGUGUGUGUGUGUGUG!
I think Vigil was refering to oil and gas issues, not anything you said.
I don't know anything but about bikes, but I would venture to guess that a bike could last as long as a car if maintained properly.

Shit.
Well, aren't I just a slithering worm.
I think at one point that I had both threads open at the same time yet failed to put two and two together even though the implications should have been perfectly clear. I mean, I really don't get it; I hadn't forgotten any of the circumstances of Dia's thread, yet I didn't piece it together somehow.
I must be real tired or as stupid as dirt.
So, please forgive ME.

This is one of the best collisions of harmless intent and utter misapprehension I've seen in a long time. :D
Something like a Vulcan 500 should get an oil change at around 5000 miles and a chain clean / lube every 2000 or so. As long as it's been well-maintained, it should last a fair time. I'm assuming you're looking at a used one and wonder if it's nearing any sort of ZOMG WARRANTEY EXPIAR!!! point, yes? Like with toasters... 366 days later, SPROING! and you have to buy a new one.
Um. Yeah... IIRC, the Vulcan 500 has a pretty idiot-proof engine as well.
Far as the actual question goes, how long will a car go before it starts having serious problems? I know people who can grind the transmission and brakes on a rand new car to dust in under two years, simply through misuse, neglect, and bad driving practices. I also know people who are still happily tootling along in vintage autos, 30 year old Volvos, and similar whatnot.
Really the only way you're going to know is to inspect the one you're looking at and ask lots of pointed questions about its maintenance history, storage, repairs, etc.

well, thanks alot guys, it's really a tough call because I can't personally check it out. The one i'm buying is 9 hours away in illinoise, it's an online thing and i'm pretty stressed about it. (
http://adcache.cycletrader.com/5/3/0/84319630.htm) this is the exact bike i'm looking at. A very tough call. How much damage can you do in 10k miles and 7 years? The bike looks alright, I talked to the owner tonight and he seemed pretty willing to talk about things like why he was selling it, and if there were any problems. He even admitted that he ripped the title corner accidently, so I think he's being honest. Also, the service i'm using allows me to ship it back (at my own expense) within a certain amount of time after delivery if there are problems. Wish me luck gentlemen...

Yeah, yeah, the joke is beyond dead, I'm sure. By the way, GBM should watermark this for posterity!
