How long did it take you to discover that you could one-hit KO with the blackjack? - by Cigam

baeuchlein, I think that is an unused line. Perhaps the devs too thought that IF the player has seen the trailer and IF they click on the blackjack at loadout and IF they have read Tintin comics etc etc, then they might automatically realise that this game has implemented this extremely unusual game mechanic.
Guess the devs of Thief 2 & 3 realised that this wasn't necessarily going to be the case and so gave explicit in-game directives instead.
It's all well and good talking about pop culture tropes but if you have never played a game with a mechanic for insta-kill throat sliting of snuck up on enemies, then unless something tells you that this is the first game ever to incorporate such a mechanic, you might just spend the first part of the game using the knife for standard slash and stab knife-fighting as you would melee fight in any other game.

my final say is this when it comes to blackjack from actual cannon picture proof
Inline Image:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/htC8_NWNwBo/maxresdefault.jpgnotice the items in garrett's hands one side has the sword "Constantine sword by the looks of it, and other side had a bow for sure it's Not the alarus upgrade bow, just the standard bow from keeper training course
the blackjack is not shown in image
but i did remake that image where he is only holding the blackjack as i felt it suited garrett better
great topic though

Cigam, you may very well be right about that line never being used. I don't remember having heard it anywhere either. It was translated in the german and french versions of Thief, though. I'm also rather sure there are some other lines which were never used in the OMs. And indeed, I played through the whole Thief 1 game and a major part of Thief 2 until I was reminded of the wondrous effects of the blackjack, and subsequently re-read that page in the Thief 1 manual once again. Playing one or two well-known ego shooters before Thief also had an effect: I rather used backstabbing and retreating, repeated two times again, as a way of quickly (and rather violently) disposing of enemies, until I got accustomed to blackjacking the opponents instead.

I just discovered that you can write on maps like 2 months ago watching someone play an FM on YouTube. My head is hung in shame. I played T1 demo before it came out and I just now learned this??

but how do you remove writing on map once its set?
Overlord Nexus on 13/3/2022 at 03:36
You can't, AFAIK.

Right-clicking onto an entry you made on the map will remove it. It is not possible to remove single letters from an entry, though.
By the way, when writing on the map I noticed that one or two letters cannot be written. I think the letter B is one example. Don't remember whether it was the capital letter or the "non-capital" version that just would not appear, though.

Oh wow, thank you!
I've been making notes on maps for years and never could find a way of removing them... more annoying when I get my annotations wrong. Now I can remove instead of "X" out the notes.
I often annotate maps with 'w' (open windows, particularly in thieves highway FMs), 'o' for secret paths / passages, 'L' for locked doors I need to return to, '|\-' symbols for path blockages or alternate paths, etc. Old school "ascii" map notations.
Just tested on single letter and was able to remove; might need to re-position the mouse pointer before right click (or left click for us lefty mouse users).

I've not had any issues with any of the lower or upper case letters. Make sure the mouse pointer doesn't slide outside the 'map' area when you're typing on the map; mouse needs to be focused on the map, not the map frame.
