Artemus was a fairly important character in TDS, but what about the two games? After hearing his voice on TDS I think he is also the Keeper who meets with Garrett in the endgame scene of TDP. Just an observation.

That's right. He's the one who tells Garret about the upcoming Metal Age in T: DP. I think he is actually the keeper Garret was trying to steal from when he was a child.

SOME SPOILERS ABOUT Thief 1 and Thief 2.
Yes. Artemus is the one who hired Garrett in his youth. He could have been quite old at that time, even if his voice didn't show that. Garrett said "Let go of me, old man!".
On the other hand, in the real medieval times, the young ones 10-14 saw those in middle thirties as old men, so if the LGers were faithful to that little detail, we can only speculate how really old Artemus was at that time. At the end of the game however we hear his voice much older. At least 10 years. Nate Wells is credited for the voice even if he is called "Keeper Nate" but only because at that time no Keeper had a name.
In Thief 2, it is still Artemus that warns Garrett of Truart's plan. And even if he sounds a little bit differently, Nate Wells is once again credited for his voice. The other ones are Ian Vogel (("Find the humour if you must, but can you tell me truly Garrett? Are there any trees in your part of town?") and Daniel Thron ("Have you heard the Interpreter's words?").
A note: The Keeper that helped Garrett in Escape! was still Artemus even if he had the voice of Daniel Thron who tried to emulate it in order to sound as "older Artemus". Maybe Nate Wells wasn't available during the developing of that cutscene.

Artemus was like Morpheus in the Matrix, to me. He knew the prophecies, believed in them and pushed them along. It royally sucked when...
you find Gamall peeled his skin
I think Artemus was one of the remaining true Keepers in TDS. He was still going out in the field and doing something. If he had to do something on his own he did, but he realized he was a supporting character. In the end, someone else was going be the center of the story.
What a great character.

In my humble opinion
Keeper Artemus should have met a more dramatic or at least more meaningful end in Deadly Shadows. He is the keeper that brings Garret into the fold, is the primary liason between him and the Keepers, the one who knows him the best of all( I presume), and saves(kinda) his life once. He's the one Keeper you meet first in all of the games and is the one warning Garret about whatever imminent apocalypse is about to befall the city. He is pretty much the quentissential representation of the keepers throughout most of the series.
However his death occurs offscreen and Garrett doesn't even seem to notice enough to make a final sly remark about Old Man Artemus kicking the bucket. Contrast this with the end of Thief 2 which made a big sappy deal out of Victoria's sacrifice, enough of a deal to get Garrett noticeably pissed for once in the series. At the very least, I think Artemus deserved a better end then disappearing only to become a bag of skin for the Hag in his final appearance.
Just a nitpick at Deadly Shadow's plot.
I totally agree with you Idiotbox.
I was dissapointed/annoyed that they just glossed over the entire thing.
Come on! Not even an in-game vocal blurb? Nothing?!:nono:
mutter, mutter....

There is a nice line in TDS:
Garrett: I suppose if you were working for Gamall, you would have tried to kill me just now.
Artemus - Tried? I would have succeeded....
Artemus was not only the man that brought Garrett to the Order, but also, he is the man that actually trained him. So even after all those years and despite Garrett's unique ability in the Keeper ways, Artemus is still able to outsneak him :) Or at least he says so and I think so. ;)

I thought that by saying "I would have suceeded" he means that Gamall is very powerful. Don't forget, as soon as Artemus enters, Garrett says "I don't like being followed...right on cue :cheeky:

SOME SPOILERS ABOUT Thief 1 and Thief 2.God Damn, that was a fairly cool post. Hats off to you, mate!
[edit: Wasn't Daniel "The Eye"? And I thought that the "I would have succeeded" thing was Artimus' way of saying "I'm still better than you,
Thief. :) ]

Yep, it's Daniel Thron, aka "The Eye"; Smart guard; Keeper.
And I think too that Artemus was still better than Garrett. I think that many elder Keepers were still better than him at the stealth art, but nobody of them was so resourceful, able to overcome dangers and find the "right" way in. And above all, do this in an artistic way.
By the way: Nate Wells, aka Artemus >>
