How (if) can I persuade someone to give me one of his items?

Hello, everybody!

From reading some of the posts in the MW forums I get the impression that it is possible to persuade a NPC to give you something from his gear.

Is this true, and if so, how do I make it, or at least try to make it?

For example, I met a NPC with a nice ebony shield. How can I take his shield without killing him or stealing?

You can only persuade someone to give you an item they have if it's part of a quest.
