Nope, Azal. He will disappear after you have lost him out of view for half a minute or even less - that's the case for as soon as you and he left the room. That means that you have to stay behind him downstairs all the time, or you will be alone there with these 20 troopers. And they will not be amused.
Sure, he will take them out, even with his knife, but staying behind him while he chased all of them with the knife and while the troopers occasionally aimed their guns at me, that was too tedious for me this time, so I ran. (I am trying to avoid taking anything out this time, be it KOing or killing, that's why I did not help by throwing some LAMs from upstairs into the room.)

Well I did what Azal said several times and Paul never disappeared... And no, I'm not a weenie... :p

I do that all the time for the squad who breaks into the room, too. And inside of the room, he won't disappear, yeah. But just let him run downstairs and try it... or does he only disappear when you are downstairs, too? Triggering him, then back into the restroom, and it would work? Hrmm...

Why does it matter how many troopers he takes out? You still "die" in the end. Unless you're really desperate for ammo, I suppose :)

Basically, as long as you don't leave the 'Ton through the window, Paul will stay alive. If you want to fight it out, you're free to do so -- it's probably the most intense firefight in the whole game. However, even if you make it out alive, you're going to "die" (AKA, be captured) at Battery Park anyway.

I'd prefer to get captured in battery park for sure though if I had the choice between getting killed in the hotel or making it to that cute ambush in the park. 2 more conversations (and yet 1 more, if you go and chat with Joe Greene), and I love those conversations. :)

Lytha's right about Paul disappearing. It happens with a few characters in the game; they disappear when you lose sight of them for too long. The one I remember most is Paul, the other one is the sick man in the Free Clinic asking for a cure. Once his lines are up, he'll walk to the entrance of the Free Clinic. If you lose sight of him before he actually reaches it, he still disappears.
There's also a skill point bonus if you manage to escape to the subway station in Battery Park, so it's not just the ammo.

This happens if you start shooting people, too. Many times (especially in the Free Clinic) I went on a rampage just for fun, only to have people disappearing into thin air before I could kill them! That pissed me off bigtime. The game is still a lot of fun to f$%^ around with though, despite this shortcoming. I managed to take out everybody in the bar, without Jock noticing.
