HI, im on my fourth run through of Deus Ex and, while the first time I played it Paul survived I know seem incapable of getting him to live. Do you have to kill every UNATCO soldier in the 'Ton or something to that effect? because I'm sure I have on occasions and he seems to die anyway?
And exactly what is it that you do that make Jaime turn up in Paris instead of Hong Kong? I've got both to happen and I'm never sure what I actually said to make it happen.

I think the trigger is located on the window, so if you get out of the hotel through the window Paul's bye bye.
Not sure, though.
As concerns Jaime, it depends on if you ask him to stay at Unatco and spy on them, or come with you and meet in HK.
If you meet in HK, he'll not have stayed in NY long enough to get Gunther's killphrase.

As for Paul, don't go out the bedroom window, or Paul dies for sure. Going out of the room together should be sufficien enough to kep him alive. Little help won't hurt of course: I usally plant gas grenade and a LAM near the Paul's door and deal with whoever happens to be nearby (or let paul handle them), then take out the sniper in the balcony and gas the lobby, before thinning their ranks (usually with trangs).
After breaking out tof the jail, tell Jaime to wait in the UNATCO and act as a spy there. That's enough for him to turn up in Paris.

By the way, I just realized the title of this thread, and particularly in this forum, could somewhat ruin this part of the game for newcomers who haven't yet, well, played it...
I think it may be a good idea to edit it one way or another...

White Phosphous GEP rounds are great for stopping the rush of troops into Paul's apartment.
The moment UNATCO blows the doors, I fire off 1 round through the doorway ... if I get lucky I will get to see a burning MIB running around ...
Chucking LAMs and Gas Grenades at the door work well too ... sometimes I choose to throw about 2-4 LAMs slowly through the destroyed door ...

Even if Paul runs out of ammo while there are still a dozen or so of them left, and is attacking the snipers with his knife... even then you can make sure he survives by just running out of the front door.
It's similar as how to avoid the killer reputation in castle clinton (just stay <i>out of</i> the upper part of the castle, never even set a foot into the kiosk coming from below) - just stay away from the bedroom window, and he should be fine.

Paul is immortal - if you want, you can hide in the secret room like a weenie (and make yourself coffee or have a smoke) while he does all the dirty work.
After a few minutes he should have killed just about everyone in the hotel and you can leisurely make your way out the front doors.
