Every summer I end up with the same problem - I struggle to sleep because it's too hot. I suspect my memory foam mattress isn't allowing proper air circulation and is trapping heat. Memory foam seems necessary as I've been prone to back problems, and tended to wake up feeling bad. The memory foam feels better in that regard.
A thin blanket/sheet helps to keep the tempeture in check, but it feels wrong because it's so light. I prefer a heavy feeling.
I've read about breathable memory foam, and weighted cotton blankets, which are both said to be good at regulating the temperature while still feeling nice, but thought it wise to get other peoples' views. E.g. are there particular materials that one should look for, others to avoid etc. Or is there something else you'd recommend?

I go for a thin blanket in the summer, the lightness doesn't bother me. Regular mattress.
Memory foam mattress sounds interesting. I've been having back issues lately but not quite bad enough that I've actually done anything about it. Gettin old I guess!

I don't know about the temperature - I've never had a problem with that - but I used to have a memory foam mattress, and after a a few years it stopped bouncing back and had a permanent indentation in it where I slept, and that was giving me (minor) back issues.
I got a natural latex mattress instead, and the back problems went away. Slightly harder than the memory foam, but behaves somewhat similarly. It's also meant to be much cooler than memory foam, so that might be something to look into as an alternative to breathable memory foam. But, again, I never had a problem with the heat with either mattress.

Waterbed. Since I was 22. Cool in summer and warm in winter. You can even lay on your arm and it won't go to sleep. Great on your back. And sex? Catch a wave and your sitting on top of the world as the Beach Boys said. Get the right rhythm and you only work half as hard.

So what you're saying is that Sgt. Pepper caught you by surprise?

I read that sleeping on your back is better for your back so I did that last night and now my hip hurts instead wtf
Is this just what middle age is? Is this how it's gonna be from now on? Goddammit.

Ah well! :D
I know that the prostate disturbs sleep for lots of men my age (
it gets bigger as you get older) causing visits to the bathroom several times per night. (
But I’m glad that I do wake. Not the sort of waterbed I want :joke:). I appreciate the problems of sleeping when it's really hot. Irrespective of mattress, I sleep deepest after a day with lots of physical exercise. :)
