Hi, I'm trying to introduce DX to my friends, but find it difficult due to language barrier. Most of them play nothing but hack'n'slash Diablo2 (killing cows for equipment) or Lineage (Chinese version, of course).:( Ideas from non-English speakers are most welcome. If you have any suggestion, please tell me. Thanx!

Just act superior and as if they missed everything worth to live for. I got five people or so into loving it this way.
My primordial problem are not hack'n'slay guys, but console gamers. I can't say why, but I hate the console version of DX. This is a goddamn computer game!

It can be very difficult.
My friends are also mainly into consoles or action-heavy FPS. Among them, DX, Thief, SShock and games like these are known disparagingly as "my" games that only I like and the others never really enjoy.
In my experience, it is not possible to get someone to enjoy a game/film/book ( or whatever ) if they have absolutely no interest in any aspect of that thing- it would be unlikely, for example, that a hardcore player of console sports games ( and nothing else ) would enjoy DX.
However, I have managed to get a few people hooked. I think the trick is to find some aspect of the game that they would enjoy, and focus on it, and then gradually pull them into the main game.

Cut out a picture of Christina Aguilera and paste it on the cover of the game, buy a keg of beer, buy some pizzas, and tell your friends you have a hot new title for them to try. Don't even mention it to them that the game requires thinking - otherwise you'll scare them off.:sly:

My friend, a console gamer who has never played DX, was ecstatic when telling me about Hitman 2. Telling me about how you can complete the missions in various ways and how they are non-linear.
"Ha", i said. :tsktsk:

Here in Taiwan, the only surviving FPS is Half-Life: CounterStrike (CS) for last TWO YEARS, without any improvement. People have no idea what Quake was, not to mention those lesser-known FPS games (yes, including DX, sadly). Pretty pathetic, isn't it?:nono:

I'm not sure if I would enjoy this game as much if I can't understand a thing they're saying.

Just tell your triggerhappy friends that Deus Ex gives them the opportunity to go absolutely nuts w/ tons of futuristic weaponry. In Hong Kong...
If that doesn't get them hooked nothing will. Not even Christina Aguilera.

I have the perfect method: I assign Deus Ex as a text for one of the writing courses I teach. Students write a review of the user manual or training mission, a review which compares Deus Ex to another FPS title (such as NOLF, NOLF 2, Hitman, Hitman 2, Thief, Thief II, System Shock, System Shock 2, Jedi Knight Outcast), and an argument paper which explores a topic suggested by the game design or storyline (portrayal of women in games, the role of violence in games, real life nanotechnology, game design issues, so on and so forth).
Worked quite well last year.

if all teachers were to be like you catman.. what a glorious world it would be.
i think the best way to introduce someone to DX, is handing them an unmarked CD in a paper enveloppe, and sliping it to them incognito, whispering something about majestic 12 pulling the strings. then run off cackling madly MADLY!
