I've missed out on all this action :(

I had no idea that non-American or non-Israeli flags were flammable. Live and learn.

I'll give you the first one, but I'd say even that's stretching it considering its just a picture someone drew and there's no actual personal animosity toward any specific living person.
You're thinking in Western standards, TGGP. The cartoon doesn't have to be against a "living" person. Nor does it really matter that the cartoon was drawn by an individual.
What they see is a depiction of Mohammed.
Mohammed. A Prophet so holy that no man is allowed to draw a picture and call it him. A Prophet who is
second to none, save God Himself.
They also see this depiction is making fun of Mohammed.
This goes beyond mere heathenism. It is desecration of their paradigm, their culture, and their faith. It even affronts their very nations, their people, for in Islamic countries, law is based on faith.
This indignity gets printed in newspapers all over Europe.
Our response to them? "Lighten up."

That seems like the right response to me.
SNAFU on 3/2/2006 at 23:02
It seems. But from their view, is it something to "lighten up" about?

EDIT : To clarify, this is one of the reactions in the french press after the chairman of the daily "France Soir" has been dismissed by the newspaper's franco-egyptian owner Raymond Lakah for showing the danish pictures.

Clearly the mohammed with the bomb head picture, depicts how short fused they are. If something like those cartoons can make them tick, they are really just walking bombs, waiting to explode.
And i for one haven't heard any complaints about, for example, movies like Dogma that make fun of Christian religion. Buddy Christ anyone?
thefonz on 3/2/2006 at 23:17
so someone want to explain to me clearly what the big deal is with them?
they're not even funny - thus disproving the point of them in the first place.

Are you kidding me?
The extremes of Christianity manage to get upset about
Harry Potter when they really try hard enough. That Crusades film got them edgy. In fact, you only needed to read the thread for a couple of other examples.
They haven't surrounded any embassies (to my knowledge), but they can still pull some pretty stupid stunts when they put their minds to it.

Images of Mohammed are a no-no. Whether this is for all of Islam or only the hardcore, I don't know.
The lack of funny has been touched on up-thread. I kind of like "I shall not sketch Mohammed", however.
