If I read that right, you're saying poor blacks in america live in "opulance"?
Actually, it was just a pain in the ass way of demonstrating that in western countries money isn't the real obstacle to success, and more importantly, societal integration.
As is clearly shown by the careers of some rather famous terrorists, being economically successful in a western country does not mean that they are integrated, or want to integrate into another culture.
If Muhammad is a doctor in New York, he may still hate the society with a passion. If Tyrone bags groceries in Atlanta, he is likely more integrated into society. Sabella, a pentecostal Nigerian immigrant to America, is very likely to become more integrated than either Muhammad, or Tyrone, even though Muhammad may be richer, and Tyrone was born here.
I seems clear to me that cultural upbringing has the most to do with. Sabella didn't get the victim/entitlement mentality culture that Tyrone did, or the religious/cultural mentality that Muhammad did in Saudi Arabia.

Regarding the effect of slavery on black America, I highly reccommend Thomas Sowell's "Black Rednecks & White Liberals" (which also contains the equally informative pieces "The Real History of Slavery" and "Are Jews Generic?"). A lot of the things we associate with African-Americans today (higher than average rates of unemployment, lower than average rates of marriage) weren't the case for about a century after slavery. It's really in the second half of the 20th century that these came about, so attributing them to slavery would be rather off.
