I've decided I want the house in Solitude now. I like Solitude, looks a lot more interesting than most of the others and a bit larger. For all their talk about how Skyrim's cities were supposed to be larger than any of the ones in Oblivion (save the Imperial City, of course), I'm not seeing it. As far as I can tell, the larger of the towns are about there with Skingrad or Anvil, and a tad short of Leyawiin size-wise. And while there's some catchy architecture variation, they could do with some more people milling about them. Where's that Construction Set, Beth?


There is a free home you can have in Markarth... all you need to do is perform a quest favour for someone... There is an abandoned house in Markarth, with a priest of Stendarr waiting in front of it. When you approach, he'll ask you to help him investigate the place. Do it. Do it now.

I think it doesn't count as a home per se for stats, but apparently you can use it as such with no problem, containers and so on. It is, in fact, implied during the quest.
