So since I seem to always have a ridiculous sum of gold, and I never spend it on anything, I started buying up houses in search of the perfect one to call my permanent home.
First house - Whiterun. Cheap. Served its purpose well, but has no enchanting table upgrade.
Second house - Riften. Fairly cheap. Has an enchanting table, but storage options are terrible. There isn't even any containers anywhere nearby the alchemy station to store your ingredients.
Third house - Solitude. Expensive. Big. Shiny. Has everything. But storage options are also terrible, as far as being set up conveniently.
Fourth house - Markarth. Fairly cheap. Nice size with awesome storage options, compared to the others. There is an ingredient pouch within reach of the alchemy table and a barrel for storing extra potions. The enchanting table has nearby storage (just outside the room). Oh, but also... Garrett is my housecarl.
...
I am never moving out of Markarth. I haven't even seen any of the other houses yet, but I can't possibly see how they may be better. *swoon*

Chicks dig a sexy voice, Piggy. ;)
I'm ready to kill Lydia (in Whiterun) every time she tells me that she's "my sword AND my shield" yet I don't think I'll ever get tired of hearing Garrett tell me that. ;)

I take it any and all containers in a purchased house are 100% safe? I've been keeping all of my stuff in the bedroom chest in Breezehome and even though I've now furnished the place I've still been refraining from moving items to other containers. For fear of spawn fairies stealing my loot.
Also, what's up with items not being listed alphabetically in the chest, anyone else getting that?

I have houses in Whiterun, Solitude, and Markarth, but much prefer Solitude only because it reminds me so much of the world of Thief - especially at night. What I really want is for Bethesda to hurry up & release the Creation Kit so I can create my own abodes. I'm thinking somewhere high up in the mountains might be novel. I'd also like a stable in the backyard so I don't have to keep travelling to the public stables outside some of the towns.

Another reason I like the Markarth house (apart from the aforementioned reasons) is because it's got that Dwemer touch to it, and I love the Dwemer style. I love Dwemer ruins in Morrowind, and I love them in Skyrim. It's pretty much a win all around.
That said, I too can't wait for the editor to be released. I was never very good at using it myself to make things from scratch, but I could usually find a house mod I liked and then use the editor to tweak it a bit more until it was exactly what I wanted. I'm sure there will be some amazing house mods out there to choose from.
@Ostriig - As far as I know, all containers in any house you own are safe to put stuff in, and I haven't lost anything yet. The only time you run a risk of things disappearing is when you put them in anything you don't 'own', which includes ruins or forts that you may have cleared of bandits.
A friend of mine cleared out a fort of bandits and decided to make it his home. He went back there sometime later to find that the Imperials had moved in, fixed up the place, and all his stuff was gone. Oh, and they kept telling him to get lost. Fortunately he didn't lose anything important, but it was a lesson learned. ;)

I remember in Morrowind to set up camp in the small 'supplies' room that had a bedroll somewhere in the underworks of Vivec. Back then it never occurred to me that things might get pulled out (never happened).
So, I believe it depends on how likely are spawns in that area.
But I need to find a home soon as well. Next to various dwemer artifacts, I'm carrying a small library, half a herbs shop and a least 6 different staffs of uber-damage (Not counting my two bows of coolness and 640 ancient nord arrows).
Apparently, that Markath home would be my best option, me being a treasure hunter...

Cheers, Hanse!
I've decided I want the house in Solitude now. I like Solitude, looks a lot more interesting than most of the others and a bit larger. For all their talk about how Skyrim's cities were supposed to be larger than any of the ones in Oblivion (save the Imperial City, of course), I'm not seeing it. As far as I can tell, the larger of the towns are about there with Skingrad or Anvil, and a tad short of Leyawiin size-wise. And while there's some catchy architecture variation, they could do with some more people milling about them. Where's that Construction Set, Beth?

There is a free home you can have in Markarth... all you need to do is perform a
quest favour for someone...
There is an abandoned house in Markarth, with a priest of Stendarr waiting in front of it. When you approach, he'll ask you to help him investigate the place. Do it. Do it now. I think it doesn't count as a home per se for stats, but apparently you can use it as such with no problem, containers and so on. It is, in fact, implied during the quest.
Dia on 25/11/2011 at 12:47
Early on, during my first visit to Markarth, I ran into that priest but chose to ignore him. Then after several other visits to the same city I noticed he had disappeared and I ended up having to do the favor so I could buy a house there. I don't regret it as the house is beautiful. Costly, but beautiful.
And yeah, like so many others I'm still waiting for Bethesda to stop dragging their feet and just release the damned Creation Kit!

From what I gather the editor is the NEXT priority.
It'll even be tied to Steam works, so you create a mod, upload it via Steam, everyone can DL it and rate it. It'll be much easier to find mods than in the past, and much easier to get them up for use.
