Something they probably thought was "Hlaalu's quests mostly involve convincing people, and there's not much money in that; likewise, Telvanni quests are mostly running odd jobs and occasionally casting a few spells, so we'll give spells and cash; but Redoran are supposed to loot robbers 24x7 and so we don't need to give them much at all, they'll be rolling in cash from selling the excess goods"
Well, that might be their train of thought....

Well I admit I've only completed 6 quests for the Redoran great house but among those quests I've managed to 'loot' 2 or 3 chitin daggers and... oh yes a diamond.
These items were the only worth while things to loot from the 'robbers' I suppose i could have taken their common pants and shirts but something told me not to bother.
! SARCASM MODE OFF!
Seriously though i understand your point I should refrain from judging the faction until I've completed all of the quests it offers.
Cheers ;)

The Imperial Cult (I know it's not a house) is extremely generous as well. It seemed as though they were always saying something like, "Gee, you've been doing a great job for us. Here's a pair of gloves." Then you find out that one glove improves your personality (constant effect) by 5 points and the other does the same for your agility. Makes your life lots easier. Redoran House and the Imperial Cult seem to be compatible too, so you might want to consider belonging to both.

Red: Okay, finished off the Redoran quests (all of 'em) and overall they're too stingy for words. You can get a few pieces of ebony armor (boots, a helm, and something else; oh, and as is well known you can loot Venim's corpse of ebony and a daedric dai-katana at the end... oh, wow) and a few misc. magic items (ancestor ring, etc.) but nothing earth-shattering, and almost no cash rewards at all.
Whoever made this House really was an inconsiderate bastage IMHO (and yup, to anyone who wonders, I've maxed-out the other 2 houses as well w/ previous chars)

Oh you are joking... well I was right after all but I don't feel happy about it.
I've progressed to rank of kinsman i have a second phase stronghold and I've progressed to getting duties from the woman in vivec after completing Niminda's quests.
(Oh and i have to admit i cheated and consoled in the 5 grand i had to pay for the stronghold - strangely i felt justified though...)
After doing all these quests I've been rewarded with 200 gold and a less than amazing 'holy shield' - an enchanted bonemold shield which restores something like 10 health per use (which is no use to me specialising in double handed weapons and heavy armour).
The idea for the faction is great but the rewards are abysmal and after doing the two 'guar lady' quests you find yourself wondering why you bothered.
To be honest i just wish i'd chosen to do that battlemage character i was thinking about rather than my 'Dark knight' type - i've heard only good things about the Telvanni.
As much as i don't want to start over the character i'm using just doesn't inspire me and I'm not enjoying the Redoran faction i just feel like i'm trying to get through it as quickly as possible rather than enjoying the process.
I think I'll conclude with suggesting to all people wanting to create a 'knightly' type character - join the Imperial Legion no matter your race. The legion offers far better rewards IMHO and I think the general ‘feeling' of the faction is better.
Thanks very much for your help Forsythe. :)

Okay, I've got a Hlaalu stronghold, so maybe it's different... but back up a step...
To my knowledge in the stronghold you get all sorsts of groovy stuff, like ebony swordsetc.. that you can keep or sell.
Forsythe on 12/7/2002 at 18:58
Sure, but as (at a certain point) you have access to all the Houses' strongholds' contents, regardless of your own House, that's rather a moot point, no?
WingedKagouti on 12/7/2002 at 19:15
Not quite since the stuff you take from the other strongholds will count as stolen (and thus all your items of that type will count as stolen). A small thing, but noteworthy IMO.

I suppose; I never get caught (frenzy is a wonderful thing, I'm sure you'll agree), and besides, so many caves and such have things 'owned' by someone that the distinction is only truly appreciable to guild/House merchants.
