I'm currently doing short forays into areas where there are grubs, Dream Warriors (who so far are all surprisingly easy) and parts of the map that I've obviously missed. Is there any in-game way of telling where there are bosses that can be fought for a second time? I found the Failed Champion, but other than that I just know about the ones that I've read about.

If they leave a corpse behind when you kill them (with one exception), you can fight them a second time with the Dream Nail.

Looks like this could be an interesting read for some of you:
(

"The creators of Hollow Knight describe how they built a complex, interconnected world, from sketches to final game."
I haven't read it yet, since I haven't played Hollow Knight yet (but I will!) and this article looks like it could be filled with spoilers. But from quickly scrolling through, it looks like a pretty thorough discussion, supported with lots of pictures of the hand-drawn maps they used while designing the world and its connectivity.

From a quick glance, I can tell it has a few spoilers in it, at least as far as the map layout is concerned.
Still, it looks like it'll be worth reading if you've beat the game, or don't care for being spoiled at all.

Yup, that's a fully awakened Dream Nail. Now what should I do with it? And why do the words super meat boy whisper at the back of my mind...?

A fully awakened Dream Nail, you say? HERE COMES SOME SPOILERS!
Then go to the Palace Grounds in the Ancient Basin. Make damn sure you have the Hiveblood charm before heading there, too.

Cheers, I checked it out this morning but didn't get all that far.
I'm currently one fragment away each from both a complete mask and a complete vessel. Not entirely sure where to find the remaining fragments, though I'm thinking I'll try to finish this before heading off to the final fight once I've dragged my bleeding (yet honey-scented) carcass through White Palace.

Completed the White Palace myself. Definitely brought back flashbacks of some of the later SMB levels although not quite on par with the "I wanna be the guy" levels in that game.
Now on trying to complete the third Colosseum fight - the challenges are fun but seem to go on just a little too long.

So... I think I did perhaps 2/3 of White Palace. There was a moment there when I thought, "Nope. Nope, nope, nope." But when I realised that there are benches along the way, I was kinda relieved that I can manage this without going absolutely barmy.
At least I hope so. I'm not through yet.
As far as the last mask and vessel fragments are concerned that I still need to get, I've, ahem, consulted the Wise Men of Fa'q and it looks like I'll have to do the Delicate Flower quest as well as defeat the second form of the Crystal Guardian, and that should take care of things.
Edit: ... and that's it for White Palace. It feels like the most difficult bits came at the beginning. In any case, glad I persisted... and got that out of the way!
