Hollow Knight: Silksong is certainly one of the most anticipated games of the year, and I remember the first game getting lots of love in here as well, so I suppose that Silksong deserves its own thread. It was only released yesterday, but has anyone played it yet?
I have! It's been years since I played the first Hollow Knight, so I've forgotten how much I actually liked it and what exactly was it that made it so special. My first impressions of Silksong are rather good, and even though metroidvanias often tend to be a bit boring before you learn a special move or two, I think that even the basic movement and combat here feels pretty good and smooth. The game looks really nice with its hand-drawn kinda art style, and there are a lot of cool little details that add to the immersion. So far Silksong has also been a bit more colourful than the original Hollow Knight which is a welcome change to me. The sound design is top notch and just everything else as well feels very polished already.
At this stage everything feels a bit overwhelming to me, but that's my usual experience with metroidvanias. Once the gameworld opens up a bit and I learn some new moves, I'm fairly certain that I'll have a hard time putting Silksong down. And even though I've only seen like 1% of the game, I'm also pretty sure already that this game will feature in a lot of GOTY lists. :)

I've played a (very) little of it but enjoying it so far. The original Hollow Knight is one of the few games I've played through more than once and got used to its quirks and enemy patterns. I'm having to go through the process of re-learning new enemies / bosses and the best approach to defeat them. It feels like it's a step up in difficulty but that may just be because I'm not used to it yet. The complaints I've seen online about more enemies doing two hits of damage and the currency being harder to obtain are ones I'd agree with. However, it's not spoiled the game and as you say the aesthetics and music are spot on.

I've read a lot of comments about the high difficulty now, and I must say that I'm a bit puzzled. I'm fairly sure that the original HK was harder, although obviously it's still too early for me to say, as I've only beaten the first three (I think) bosses in Silksong. But they have been surprisingly... not hard? I mean, I died a couple of times, but it never felt like I was just banging my head against a wall and not getting anywhere. I read somewhere that they'll tweak the difficulty level and make things a bit easier in an update next week.
I can't understand why the "two hits of damage" is such a big deal either, I think it's just logical that the bigger and more dangerous foes deal more damage. However, I do not like the fact that I still get hit if I just happen to touch the hitbox of an enemy that is stunned or not attacking - that's a bad design choice in my opinion, and sometimes a bit annoying. Fortunately the healing system is an example of great game design, so they kind of balance each other.

Judging the difficulty of the game and comparing it to the original after only 3 bosses is not logical at all. That's like playing Dark Souls through Undead Burg and saying "what's the big deal?"
I think the "two hits" thing has been mentioned because in Silksong the earlier bosses are doing this, whereas in the first game, it didn't happen until the later stages of the game. And of course in the beginning you only have the bare minimum of health shields.

I'm still in the early stages (playing slowly when I have time) and I'm still enjoying the game. In general I think the complaints are because people have forgotten how HK was when first experienced - you didn't know how to handle certain enemies or bosses when first encountered. HK was a game where the biggest upgrade was the person playing the game itself - you gained knowledge that benefited more than the game gave though its mechanics (not unlike Thief in some respects). Silksong has reset that to a large extent and perhaps I'm still at a stage before making a final judgement but so far I'm still keen to see how it ends.

I played a couple of hours over the weekend and am fascinated by how familiar this feels, yet it's different enough not to feel like a Hollow Knight reskin - and that's true in several respects. There are a couple of elements that pretty much seem to be relabelled bits of the original game - such as the fleas replacing the grubs - but movement and combat have enough of a twist to feel fresh... and punishing. What I'll have to relearn: when do I give up on banging my head against a particular wall and try elsewhere, and when is success just within reach and I'll just have to try one, three, ten more times?
