If you cut all the "Golly gosh gee, what makes us human, Bato? I don't know. Have you, like, seen Blade Runner? I heard that's cool. I, like, tried to watch it but I couldn't understand what they were saying" speeches and the pondering montages of deep sea diving or walking in the rain that follows them, the film would be about 40minutes long.
Not a lot really happens in most films, but this one I always get to the end and go "...is that it?"

I think I had heard so much terrible terrible things about the sequel before I saw I was expecting to want to kill myself by the end. As such I was bound to be pleasantly surprised by it, which I was. It was a bit bizarre at times, but the visual style of it was pretty amazing, especially with some of the linchpin scenes. The whole exploration of hacking peoples brains in the film was a bit unnecessarily complicated at times, but even when it was almost vertigo inducing (the scene where togusa and bato get stuck in the looping hack or whatever it was) it was still breathtaking from a purely visual standpoint.
I generally find anime to be too cliched, but god damn the SAC series, especially the first, was fucking amazing. I still liked the second a lot, I just didn't think the overarching story was as interesting.

However, what about going back on topic? :) This isn't the GITS thread :p

Fuck the first movie of Ghost In The Shell??? BORING???
Yes, GitS was boring and overrated. Endless scenes of just sitting around having not particularly deep philosophical conversations. Gratuitous robot nudity. A poorly-explained "It all makes sense if you've read the manga!" world and plot.
It had good animation and art direction though. That's pretty much all it's worth watching for.
And Fist of the North Star is one of the most spectacularly retarded animes ever.

Never seen this, been looking for something new.
There was a NES game made after this (or was it the other way around) where you just punched some guys and their stomachs would open up or something meaty would fly away from them. Fairly boring even for a NES game(

GitS is one of those shows that always seemed on the verge of being really on to something, but was just usually content hanging out there on the verge without delivering the slam dunk scenes. If anything, it shows how ripe a really good cyberpunk series could be, since it's still hard to think of other shows that have really done the cyberpunk genre justice.
As for recent anime series, I've gotten into Lost Exile, Samurai Champloo, Wolf's Rain, Haruhi to an extent, Le Portrait de Petit Cossette, Full Metal Alchemist, School Days, and Cowboy Bebop of course, the one that actually delivered as much as it promised.
Lost Exile was another one that had so much promise and great style (though a younger target audience) but never seemed to deliver as much as it had the potential to.
On topic (though I think the topic has morphed into anime generally by this point), Fist of the North Star didn't make as much of an impression on me to have much opinion; not sure if I can even remember a full episode.

I haven't seen them yet, but the .hack shows supposedly do a pretty good job with the cyberpunk thing.
In a different genre check out Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It's giant robot stuff, but it's the exact opposite of Evangelion.
