The Wikipedia article mentioned that he joined the Italian army, while the Times notes that he at first refused to give up the French uniform and was more or less forced to join on the Italian side...
By the time of the Second World War he had taken French citizenship, but was deemed to old to join in active duty. He did however join the Resistance after the Germans invaded France. My hat is off to the guy!
