I actually prefer Confield over LP5. It's an album which depends heavily on mood though.
Oh, and I don't know anything as stuffed with hidden shit as Geogaddi.
Yes but with geogaddi there was the discovery of everyday sounds like the playground swings in julie and candy that resonated certain memories. Also there was an otherworldly rhythm in the way the sounds were brought together. Even the mundane sounds were made interesting by thier placement. Not that there were many. Perhaps it's just that so many things I heard reminded me of so many other things, even the distorted ones. It went straight to the psyche.
I don't really give a damn about easter eggs in music. And I don't really care to hear a drunk piss on a gallon paint can lid even if he can modulate it a bit. It's just about what it makes me feel. But that's also why any argument over it is silly. What you feel is just as valid.
On the other hand, Confield all over you grumps about 10,000 days. Shrooms at dawn! First to lose his mind minds his loss. A silly threat for a silly subject.

I listened to Confield start to finish the other day, and by the end of it I felt physically ill.

That's a fairly valid point. While I would normally see it as a fairly useless pursuit - 'hiding' unrelated stuff in your music, that is - Tool tend to package their albums as experiences, much like watching a film. Even though it's slightly pretentious, it does strike a chord with me and I feel what they've done with their last album in particular only draws you further into the creation itself.

That's because Confield is so completely detached from any kind of reference point- it's a completely alien, abstract musical gesture that represents the peak of Autechre's intent. If you're lucky you might hear echoes of detroit techno and musique concrete, but we're pushing the boat out here and the influences are not direct. I love it, it is easily one of the most groundbreaking albums in this history of music.
oh and also they do shit like that high pitched tone all up in your ear on uviol and oh god i feel weird frequencies this high are not very natural
AND WHY ARE THEY NOT? absorption, mostly i guess. fletcher-munson loudness contours indiciate that the human hearing system does not have much sympathy for borderline shit like that. I can't hear much past 13Khz at any rate
god i love cfern
EDIT: Also I'm drunk
