Well I have finally got my Herpetofauna license all I need to do now is build an enclosure and get myself a pet python.
Here in Oz it has only been leagal to keep reptiles and amphibians for the past three years and they are rather strict on the regulations still not to mention the cost of actually purchasing a reptile. Im going to get a Western Stimsons Python for starter python they are relatively small as they only grow to about 1.2 meters
Just wondered if any other TTLG members keep snakes and if there are any heads up on things to look out for , as this is my first snake im not really sure as to what to be pepared for.
Thanks for any advice

Asps. Very dangerous.
You go first, Indy.

I'd suggest you be prepared for people who ask you why the fuck you want to keep a snake in your house in the first place.
Vipercat on 20/3/2006 at 03:36
yeah ive already had people ask that but its mainly from people who have little understanding or are biased against snakes
Pythons are non venomous and if you do get bitten by the smaller ones its not even as bad as being bitten by a cat . I have had cat scratches that were more painful than a Python bite .
As to why get a snake I guess its the same as why get a budgie or a mouse.

I guess people tend to be biased against things that are classically quite poisonous and have a tendency to bite/swallow people whole.

I wanted a snake once, and pretty damn bad. I love the species, I think they are just fucking cool. I let a king snake (IIRC) slither across the back of my neck once, and damn, it wasn't half bad for a massage. I did nearly buy a cornsnake once, too. (Excellent starter snakes, probably much like the python your thinking of buying.)
Much as I love snakes, my parents talked me out of it. 'Cause, really, they don't -do- anything. Dogs have personality, cats have personality, rabbits and other small rodents can. (I know that rabbits do, I've raised two and know that are very social animals). Snakes, Tarantulas and the like.... well... I don't know just how much intelligence and personality they can show besides EAT KILL SLEEP IN CORNER. :erm:

Really? From what I remember of my rabbits and seeing my nephew's one, they just hide or maybe jump around their hutch if they're not being fed.
