This one is for framerate enthusiasts. Technical info incoming...Through experimentation, I've discovered a way to smoothen the mouse-look in Thief 1/G and Thief 2, resulting in a more immersive experience. The effect is quite satisfying on a 165hz monitor! :cheeky: Although this method works on regular 60hz monitors, the effect isn't as strong (but is still an improvement).
Disclaimer: If you're uncomfortable messing around with your settings, please don't try this. Or proceed at your own risk.
To achieve a smoother mouse-look, you'll need:
- A mouse with an adjustable poll rate (and a sensitivity slider if available)
- A high refresh rate monitor. 120hz, 144hz, 165hz. (optional)
My hardware:
- (
http://www.coolermaster.com/peripheral/mice/mastermouse-pro-l/) Cooler Master Mastermouse Pro L
- (
https://www.asus.com/us/Monitors/ROG-SWIFT-PG279Q/) 27" Asus ROG Swift PG279Q (144p / 165hz)
Getting it to work:
For best results, you should increase Thief's max framerate beyond 60fps (no need for those on 60hz monitors).
To do this, go to your Thief II directory, open cam_ext.cfg in notepad, check framerate_cap to make sure it looks like this:
framerate_cap 200
Or you can change it to ;framerate_cap 200 to disable framecapping. If Thief becomes unstable, simply change it back to:
framerate_cap 60
I should also mention I have vsync_mode 0 enabled, and ;vsync_mode 7 disabled.
Save the document in notepad and launch the game to test.
Next, set your mouse pollrate to 500hz or 1000hz. Check your mouse's manufacturer's website for details/software.
Also set your mouse speed/dpi higher. I set mine to 2700.
Your mouse might be difficult to control right now since the sensitivity is so high, but this is what we need for Thief.
Launch Thief1G/2, go into the options and drop the mouse sensitivity to 0.
Now play a mission and look around with the mouse.
If all has gone well, you should have a much smoother experience!
So the pros and cons of this are:
Pros
- Smoother, more immersive framerate (especially on high refresh rate monitors)
Cons
- Some people may not notice the difference
- Requires changing back the DPI/Pollrate setting to whatever you had it on before after exiting Thief
Lastly, I do have some video examples of this effect in action, but because they are 120fps videos, I couldn't upload them to youtube. Google drive was the next best thing:
- (

- (
https://drive.google.com/open?id=113uNItiTlhw4uMRClBTYb75IzhqtzQ7h) Enhanced mouselook
Both files are close to 2GB each. Be sure to "Download" the video, don't watch it in-browser.
That was a lot to type. I'm interested to hear people's thoughts. Thanks for reading!
