After completing all my jobs for habasi/jeweller/big helen... i go to jim and he tells me he isn't ready to accept me until im a captain... how do i get this rank? .. i figured that i would get advanced by finishing my last job of getting the staff, but i didnt ;\ anyone know what i need to do?

go to all three of the theives guild quest givers (habasi/jeweller/big helen), and talk to them about 'Advancement'.

they just tell me to work on my skills... they dont give me another rank and/or job.

if you look in your menu where it lists all your skills etc., scroll down on the skills side until you find your 'factions' (it might be called something else, i'm not sure, but it lists all the groups you've joined). put the cursor over 'thieves guild' and it'll tell you your rank, and the skill levels needed to get to the next rank. get your skills to those levels, then go talk to the thieves guild people about advancement.
