What's your point?
Some asshole banging two rocks together sounds a bit like shitty music to me.

In the 1970s I remember my Dad used to rag on about the music of the day. It wasn't Lonnie Donegan or The Beatles so obviously to him, it sucked. In the early 1980s my friends parents complained about "today's music". In the late 1980s when I started going to pubs whenever a dance track came out on the speakers that didn't appeal to our metal head ears, my friends would complain about the "complete shite being played today"
My point is that complaining about "today's music" scene is nothing new. Apparently even Hitler liked a good whinge about the German music charts of the day. It's kind of like complaining about the weather, it gives people the oppurtunity to have a good old whinge.

His point is that while that song may not what passes for music in Ghostly Apparition's eyes, it will be considered quite appropriate by many others and that it's purely a matter of perspective (and by extension, opinion).
I think it's shit too though.

What the fuck does any of this have to do with cavemen?

The point of Brian T's story was that dropping stodgy comments like "Things were better in the olden days." or "This passes for music now?" has been going on for a while.
Music isn't progressively getting worse and worse. You're just having a harder time accepting new things as you're getting older.
Turtle on 28/4/2008 at 20:28
My point is, there's no point in making that argument anymore because pointing out that someone is old is not going to make them re-evaluate their opinion of today's popular music. They've likely already heard it and it's already had it's total effect on their opinion.
Rather, it will probably make them take up a defensive position at being called old.
Note: I am old, but this post does not necessarily reflect my opinion on the subject.

you know what, music debating is stupid in general. There is no such thing as good or bad music because whats good to one will suck to another, it's completely opinion based. Just like art. I look at a shit stack of metal junk welded together as a big mess that I want to see melted down and re-made into a couple fence posts, though others see it as 'Art.

Even then, you could probably debate whether music debating is stupid. I guess the real question is what you look for in music. I'd like to think it is possible to have a decent debate on what music is good, as long as it is understood what you're trying to argue. For instance, since I like a variety of different music (From Rick Astley to Ozzy Osbourne, and beyond...) the main things that appeal to me in music is usually a fast beat with lyrics I can connect to on something of an emotional level.
I might find it a valid opinion for someone to say that the heavy metal music I like is something they aren't too fond of because it sounds too electronic, or it doesn't connect with them on an emotional level in the way it does to me.
The real problem would be when someone says something is utter shit or gives no real recognition to the music itself, and simply says it's shit. In the end, you'd really have to debate if that's even debating it, but is more of just shit-slinging. Unless there's some real rationalization as to why something is bad, it's impossible to have a decent debate.
For all it goes, someone might have the opinion that debating as a whole is stupid, but unless you really spend sufficient research or speaking to actually, well, debate whether or not it is good to debate things, it's just not really relevant.
That said, I personally like the idea of debating music and analyzing it, with what is the attraction people have to certain genres, and what's the turn off to others.
I'm not saying it's stupid to think musical debating is stupid, only that's it's stupid to think that anything is really stupid based on opinions of others, as that was the purpose of debating, when you have an opinion, you're likely to defend it, and look for reasons why you're right, rather than doing the research, then taking sides after that. However, if you feel differently I'm willing to debate the other possibilities.
Good debate: "I really like this band." "I don't, it's just screaming." "Well, the point of screaming is really to add to the emotional weight the lyrics hold in the beginning." "I suppose, it just sounds like noise to me though." Etc.
Bad debate: "This band sucks!" "Are you kidding? IT ROCKS!" "Are you retarded? It sucks!" "No u!" Etc.
Awkward debate: "Rrrgg sfffrg" "Grrrg!?" "Srrg"

You are, of course, completely wrong.
