Have you tried (
http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,211.0.html) System Shock Portable?
DOSBox is a little too slow for SS1 on current systems (at least, if you want to play at 1024x768), so I'd advise you to try running SS1 without it first, if you can. Unless you have a 64-bit version of Windows...

i have a dual core processor like it says i need in the dos wiki to run system shock smoothly - i just cant get it start on dosbox, let alone run it smoothly.
Also i dont have a 64-bit of windows - will it run better with it?
System Shock Portable runs fine but it crashes to the desktop frequently

DOSBox is, or rather, should be, very easy to get SS1 to run in.
I can't really give you any advice as to where you went wrong since you didn't give enough detail on your problem. We can't help unless you tell us exactly where it stops working and the exact wording of any and all errors messages.
Getting SS1 to run without DOSBox can be considerably more difficult and it won't work on certain computers, but if you can get it running, it will generally be faster without DOSBox, since it isn't running in an emulator.
SS1 is a 16-bit DOS program, so it will not run at all (without using DOSBox) on a 64-bit version of Windows, as they no longer support 16-bit applications.
Under what circumstances did SS1 crash to the desktop when using SS-P?
The most common cause of that is using the mouse2kv method and leaving the mouse cursor off the edge of the screen when reloading after dying. You need to always move the mouse pointer to the top-left corner before reloading.

I had pretty good results running Virtual PC 2007 and installing DOS 7.10, then installing System Shock that way on Windows Vista, works well with x64. It runs almost perfectly, but the mouse may need some fiddling, depending on your mouse driver. Nontheless, if you cannot get SS1 to run on Windows via other methods, you may try this. Pretty easy as long as you know you way around DOS.

Interesting; I never thought about trying that. Thanks.

I did.
It doesn't support MPU-401 sound, so it's unacceptable unless you can't play it any other way, IMO.

Hmm. What about VMWare?

IIRC, I couldn't get the sound to work at all. Even though it ought to have worked. Not sure what I did wrong.

Odd. I don't know enough about it to troubleshoot, though; I only used it twice; once for a couple Fedora installations for school and once very briefly for playing with the Win7 beta.
