I'm ready to kill something.
Here is the skinny: Linksys Wireless G WUSB54GSv2.1, uninstalled / reinstalled a dozen times, no available wireless connections available to hook to.
Two other connections here work, just not my main PC. Very important that I get mine hooked back up.
ipconfig complains about Media Disconnected, so no ipconfig is possible. Everest and all diagnostics I can think to run claim that the device is fine. Drivers uninstalled / updated / reinstalled etc etc blah blah blah. HOSTS file has nothing weird in it. WinSock fix didn't appear to do anything.
I'm NOT particularly clever at network issues, but I know some of you are. This is making me increasingly angry and frustrated, partly because my ISP is bit shit (and the tech support is non-existant because apparently my ISP doesn't think tech support is very important) but mostly because I have a sneaking suspicion that it's a pretty obvious problem that I ought to be able to solve myself.
I don't know what info to give, so tell me what I need to tell you and I will. But goddammit, if I don't get this fixed pretty damned pronto I'm honestly going to burst a fucking vein.
Yours unhappily, GBM

Is this router connected directly to the PC you are using, or another one?
Type in your browser bar, (
http://192.168.0.1) or 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.2 and see if you get a menu from your router. The default username and password is usually admin for both fields.
Get back to me with any results.
You can also use MS messenger to contact me via my e-mail address. I'm here right now for awhile.

The router connects to my PC direct via USB. None of those three IPs call up a menu in a browser. Does that imply that the problem exists with the hardware itself?

The default of your model is 192.168.1.1
That should bring up at least a USERNAME/PASSWORD query box at the least.
Is this the first time you've used this device on this PC?
Just wondering if maybe you've plugged it into a USB1.1 port, when it may need a 2.0 Port?

ahahaha! I actually DID think of that, but alas! As far as I can tell (which may or may not be very far at all) everything physical at my end is fine, in terms of having the right thing plugged into the right thing etc.
And yeah, the inability to call the router's settings thing via browser is weird to me. 192.168.1.1 (or variations there of) really ought to have given my more than a 404 page.
Maybe I'm not describing things well? The wireless adapter is attempting to connect with a wifi / hotspot kind of affair at my apartment complex. It's often been sketchy (or just plain down) for periods of time, but it's all legit and whatnot (no sneaky warwagon here).
(ps I totally appreciate the help, TBE. You're awesome.)

Maybe you've got a TCP/IP over USB issue? In your network settings is the USB device shown as being bound to TCP/IP? Just guessing here, never worked with USB networking stuff.
TBE on 2/1/2009 at 20:55
Oh right. This is a network adapter, not a network router. That changes EVERYTHING!
Hmmm. Sounds like if you're not getting ipconfig to release or renew, than maybe you've got the drivers borked.
Did you go to Control Panel, Network Setup Wizard? Try running that.

you gave young Elvis the wrong impression, that it was a router, as you now know it isnt, its just a USB-to-wifi adapter...
nb. I'm drunk so it too my far too long to type the 1st post...
Right, this will be far quicker if you just pm via msn
otherwise do the following steps...
# Assuming the wifi router in your aprtment complex give out the IP address via DHCP, click on start then run and type cmd.
# Then a little black window will appear and then I want you to type "ipconfig" - you should have an ip address, a subnet address and a gateway address if all is working correctly.
# if ist says no adapter or no ip address then do the "swap usb cable with port" proceedure - then after it reditects the adapter do the above 1st two instructions.

Well fuck me it just started working again for NO GODDAMN REASON. I didn't even DO anything new yet. Not even a reboot.
You know how you feel after you've been ranting and howling at the idiocy of something and then you discover that it's gone and fixed itself while you were busy punching the wall? Yeah. "Sheepish" I believe the term is.
Well, whatever happened / is happening, it seems to have decided to make me look and feel like a moron for getting all worked up.
This is not to say I expect the current workingness of the thing to continue necessarily, but at the moment my rage is rendered impotent by the removal of its target. Hate when that happens.
Hopefully I won't be back to bump this thread in a blistering storm of renewed hatred, but I have also learned not to assume that just because something works at the moment it isn't going to shit itself and fail again once I think everything's groovy.
Yours feeling sheepish, GBM
ps I always know I can count on you guys, even if all that happens is some kind of feng shui / voodoo / mystical universe rearranging weirdness that arcanely sweeps the obstacles out of my path on a holistic (and a little bit unnerving) level.
Hooray for the Force!
