Help with a basic skill. - by TTK12G3

This is going to look like a profoundly idiotic question, but here goes:
How do you fight? I am pretty well armed and skilled but I keep getting killed by everything without getting a strike in. I know the commands, I just don't have the technique. :p
EDIT: Ah, damn. Missed a part in the manual. Sorry. If anyone has anything to add feel free.

A thread just died right when it was started......

OK, I just got killed by a rat. How do you hit things that are below knee-hieght?

Look down?
TTK12G3 on 3/8/2006 at 17:33
Yes...thanks I've gotten past that stage already... I do look at the target and start swinging like a maniac, but it seems like I always miss no matter what. What am I doing wrong?

Sorry, that was too temping.
At the start you'll miss lots, especially if your fatigue is low. The higher your fatigue, the higher your chance to hit so try to avoid running round lots before engaging in combat. Later on when you've boosted one (or more) of your weapon skills you won't need to worry about fatigue so much.
Also, depending on the weapon you're using, you may need to get closer. With a spear you'll be able to hit people before they can hit you, but if you're using a dagger, you'll have to be almost stepping on their toes before you can hit them.

I think my problem may have something to do with my class. I chose battlemage first, but quickly found that I do not have the equipment or power to make myself useful(I suck at using magic anyway). I am going to try my luck as an archer next. Howevery, I find it odd that I am facing A RAT and I can almost never hit it!
What do I have to accomplish to level up (as a class)?
EDIT: I am making progress. What are your suggestions as to looting? I already cleaned out that smuggling ring. I helped that girl (why not?). I also found a bunch of houses along the road to Barmora, but slaughtering random (presumably innocent) households, stripping thier bodies, killing their pets, and looting them completely just does not feel as justified as what I did to the smugglers. THAT, and the nice man with the war hammer launched me back out the door in one hit.

To level up you must advance ten points collectively in your major and minor skills (ie. If you gain 5 points in Sword (Major) 2 points in Restoration (Minor) and 3 points in Block (Minor) you'll go up a level. It all depends on what you have for Major and Minor skills).
As far as loot goes, your best bet is to go to Balmora and join a Guild (Probably best to go with either Fighters' Mages' or Thieves' to start with) and do some jobs for them. You'll up your skills, get paid well and generally won't find yourself stumbling into places where you're out of your depth. I'd highly recomend against slaughtering random innocents as they may well be part of a quest at some later point. As a rule of thumb, don't attack anyone first. If someone starts hitting you, you can beat them to a pulp without worry.
Unless you stole from them, which I also don't recomend.

You could also try diving for pearls. You find them in kollops (those big clam-looking things in the water). The pearls are fairly valuable, you'll get to fight an occasional mudcrab or slaughterfish, and your athletics skill goes up faster when you swim rather than run.
BTW here's some advice that I could have benefited from when first playing the game: If you enter a cave that's really dark and lit entirely with red candles, turn around and run for the exit. You'll want to gain a few levels before you mess with that.

By "presumably innocent" I meant those houses where everyone has something like a low grade dagger or club and have little more than a common shirt on. THEY attack ME first and I find it rather easy to take care of them. I usually walk out with a ton of clothes, meaty bits, a few coins, and some drugs but nothing really interesting. I gave up on that Nord with the large hammer and loaded a save where I did not enter his house and kill the girl who was with him. I decided that unless told otherwise, I would not touch unsuspicious an house.
However, if they have a large amount of drugs or a slave ring...
I find scavenging appealing in that it is peaceful and relatively worth the time spent, but you see, I have this REALLY BIG AXE and I have this REALLY BAD ITCH to use it...:ebil:
