Hahahahha yes I am sorry, yet another vista problem.
I noticed sometimes, especially when I was doing a lot of crouching and or jumping, DX would kinda just lock up. I could still look around with my mouse but the keyboard would just stop working. Every time Itried to perform a keyboard function, I would get this weird flickering up the top of the screen.
So anyway, it was FAR too fast to actually see but I could see traces of white and green in it. After about 10 mins of hitting print screen and dumping it into MS paint I hit the jackpot. So WTF is this? A bunch of Chinese writing and a strange green arrow?

http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/4236/chijw4.jpgIt looks like somehow my Chinese IME is being triggered by a certain combination of keystrokes I have yet to identify. Then any keyboard actions are instead diverted into that, so its kinda just sitting there typing nonsense in-game. Weird. Annoying. I cant disable it caus my girlfriend uses this computer!
Any ideas what is happening? I doubt anyone here uses ANY IME's in vista let alone the chinese one but its still an interesting enough story on its own to earn a thread here. Ill keep you posted if I manage to work out whats actually going on..

Can't you disable it temporarily?

You know, in your case I strongly suggest installing a XP dualboot besides Vista for legacy purposes such as Deus Ex ;) I know it's not what you want to hear (which would be: this is how you fix this idiotic niche Vista problem;etc...), but Deus Ex is well worth it (it's one of those games that once you're hooked you'll be replaying for years to come, I have).

Hahahaha don't think I haven't considered it! But so far DX is running quite well in Vista, the sound issue has for the moment subsceded, I have finally got forced 32-bit textures working and, wouldn't you know it, the chinese IME has put aside its rebellious activity.
But, no for the record I can not temporarily disable it, I can re assign the hotkeys that make it activate but so far, nothing I was doing in DX had anything to do with those hotkeys anyway so I am still baffled by the whole thing.
Oh well, back to the game for now :D

Eeeep! Tuns out I was onto something! the 2nd of two people to have ever noticed and reported this bug. (
http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/archive/2007/02/02/1585687.aspx) This guy says it better than I do.
Apparently Ctrl + Space is the default command to switch to Chinese, only (get this) no matter WHAT you change it to, Ctrl + Space will still do it. Appears to only work with the Chinese IME. Makes sense that I didnt pick up on this earlier, I altered all the default IME hotkeys as soon as I installed Vista and must have forgotten about them, I suppose thats why I never clued in that my crouching and jumping in DX was triggering the IME into action.
But anyway, the bug seems to have ironed itself out as Ctrl + Space no longer triggers the IME like it used to. Happy days.
