I currently have two drives, a CD writer and a DVD drive. This morning I had delivered a new DVD burner to take the place of the CD writer. The new drive has a SATA connection whereas the old one is connected with an IDE cable that is also connected to the DVD drive before plugging into the Motherboard.
Please excuse my ignorance in these these things:o but is it as simple as buying a SATA cable and connecting the new dvd burner and then plugging this into any SATA slot on the Motherboard or does it have to be a particular one? - mine has a bank of five right next to each other - what about the DVD drive? does that have to be connected to the DVD burner with a cable?
Thanks for any help

No, it really is this simple:
Connect the SATA drive to the motherboard via a SATA cable, and connect the SATA drive to the power supply via a SATA power connector. And that's it :D
No need to connect it to the other drives, and the SATA data cable can be connected to any of the SATA sockets on the motherboard. Although I personally have SATA devices connected to socket 1, 2 etc. so I can easily remember them.
The only downside to SATA drives is (a) older OS's don't support them natively, and (b) sometimes the connectors can be a bit loose. Otherwise they're great.
