Well, actually for some strange reason I suddenly lost the ability to switch on my flashlight for some reason. This happened halfway through my first game (patched from the start); in my second game I never was able to use the flashlight at all. Partly because of this, I made a beeline for the Scientists' suits for the blue Night Vision.
I've tried remapping the flashlight control to keys other than the default 'L' but no dice ... anyone got an idea why?

The flashlight, like the knife and binocs is an inventory item which is usually invisible. Perhaps you somehow managed to lose yours. You could try editing one of the traders to sell them. to do this, you'll need to find every instance of the line
device_torch ;NO TRADE
and change the no trade to "= 1, 3"
Then find the list of that traders supplies for whatever point you are in the game, eg
[supplies_after_fabric]
for the trader, if you've done the first mission. From there, add the line
device_torch = 1, 1
If you're not sure which list to use, just edit all of them. If you don't have the trader files then you can extract them (using a specific stalker files extractor), or download a mod that changes them and edit that.

If you set your graphic details to minimal, then the flashlight won't work. Setting it to any other level will bring back the flashlight, no matter how are the sliders in the advanced tab set. Other than that it may be a bug, so try reinstalling the game.

running static lighting? If so, might trying r1_dynamic_lighting on from the console.
