Ive now got myself an optical mouse and Im stumped at how to get it working in the underworlds. Since getting a new computer with a SB live card I havent been able to hear anything either. Its been around two years since Ive played through UW1 and really want to have another shot at it. Id also like to play UW2 with sound and mouse as well. Or are my underworld days over?

I was wondering if someone with a SB live card could show me what their config.sys +autoexec.bat line for SB is as well as anyone with an optical mouse.

I have an IntelliMouse Explorer, and it works all fine. Try using the PS/2 adapter instead of the USB port. Not sure if you'll ever be able to get it to run under true DOS, though, but you can always play both UW games under Win9x (really! it works!).
As for the SBLive, I'd say you're out of luck. If you have the chance, obtain a SB16 or SBPro. Downgrading to an old SB card is the only convenient way. Even if you'll find a driver solution for the SBLive, the mapper/synth is not the same.

Yeah, a while back I messed with some proggie that was supposed to lie to my DOS sessions, and force them to recognize my soundcard, but all it did was piss me off and waste several hours of my time.
Now I have an old DOS box set up to run them. Gawd, I am
such a geek.

Stalwart, Im using the same mouse as you. I have been typing "Lh mouse.com" into the autoexec.bat but it doesnt work. What line are you typing?

I've played both UW 1 & 2 under pure dos with an SBlive. The musics (and digital sounds in UW2) worked perfectly.
But the SB16 emulation of the SBlive requires EMM386 to be loaded in your config.sys file.
there should be the following lines at the top of that file:
device=windows\himem.sys
device=windows\emm386.exe
dos=high,umb
(these lines are from memory as I'm currently using Win2K at work, so I don't remember if the path to himem.sys and emm386.exe is correct)
PS: I wonder if the IRQ used for SB16 emulation suffers from restrictions like "no IRQ above 7 is allowed". Anyway I configured my SBlive on IRQ 10 and SB16 emulation on IRQ 5 (this is the best IRQ for old games, IRQ 7 is not bad but shares the LPT port)

Xman, thanks for the info on the SBLive. There are IRQ limitations, and since IRQ 10 is only emulated for older sound cards under W2k, I cannot play any DOS games with my SB16.
Twisty, I don't think an IntelliMouse will work under plain DOS. I'm going to try it myself, maybe the driver will recognize it when it's plugged into the PS/2 port.

The IntelliMouse doesn't work under plain DOS. The standard drivers (mouse.com etc.) don't recognize it, and the IntelliPoint drivers are Windows only. But if you're using a DOS box, there shouldn't be any problems. Does it work under Win9x in general? If not, maybe it's a more fundamental problem, like the USB port.

Hmm.. odd, I can get my PS/2 Intellimouse to work for pure DOS games. Granted, the wheelmouse is non-functional, but that's to be expected. I've a hunch it's that whole USB vs. PS/2 issue that stalwart implied.
