I have just joined a guild in Balmora - this is early in the game. And must kill some rats at this citizen's house. I am holding my left mouse button to swing my axe but never make any contact with the rat and always end up dead. What am I doing wrong?

You're holding the mouse button to swing the axe........... are you letting it go?
Holding it down makes your swing more powerful, but you don't actually swing until you let go of the left mouse button.
Also, do you have the axe skill? You can't just pick up any old weapon, use it, and expect to hit things moderately frequently. If your skill is too low in the weapon you are using you could miss your targets quite often.

Hello.
It's probably worth double checking your "Control" settings. Floating around near all the bits to re-assign movement and jump keys is an option called "Always use Best Attack" or something similar.
Chopping with an axe does more damage than thrusting with it, just as thrusting a spear does more damage than chopping with it.
If you check this box, you'll always use the best attack for the equipped weapon.

Having a higher agility level really helps, you don't need to kill the rats do easier things until your agilits and blunt weapon skills are high enough.

You should check what skills your character has, these would have been defined during your character set-up. Then you should find yourself a half-decent weapon of the type which you are most skilled in... Preferably at least silver, just in case you come across any enemies immune to normal weapons.:)
