Quite correct. One could argue that the tree doesn't distribute equally across the crumple zone though, but as seen in ffox's video, that depends a bit on which car you're driving.
And not that it has anything to do with what I asked, but if you hit the tree instead of the other car, the average chance of survival would increase dramatically.
