I have just recently got this game and I have a 50003$ bounty on me and can't get it off. I was on my way to kill some necromancers for the fighters guild when I stoped by this shrine near Dragon fel. In the Shrine caretakers hut, there was a chest with a book that was some saints prayer book. I picked it up and put it on my guy and now I have a enourmous bounty on me.
Unfortunately the last time I saved was 6 hours before, so I ran back to Dragon Fel because I was diseased, but upon reaching the town the guards killed me on sight, I didn't even get an option to go to jail. I wondering if I will have a death warrant in every other town aswell or if there is any way to get rid of the warrant.

Was the shrine's caretaker watching you when you took the book? (I'm assuming that must be the case, or else you wouldn't have a bounty) When someone catches you stealing/killing/sleeping in the wrong bed, a brief message will appear at the bottom of the screen say "Your crime has been reported" so if that happens (or if everybody starts yelling and attacking you, you probably ought to reload)
Next time, be sure to save before attempt a theft (i.e. picking up anything any someone else's home/shop/temple) Check out the value of the book you picked up. If it's the one I think it is, it is a very valuable author's copy of sermons. The bounty you get is determined by the value of the item(s) you steal. I'm not sure what the death warrant cut off is, but you must have past it.
If you are part of the thieves' guild, they offer a bounty-remove service, for a price. Also, there maybe a consol cheat, but I'm not aware of it and that would only work for the PC version. If you have invisibility, you might try sneaking up on a guard, then becoming visible behind him and turning yourself in. Then you might get away with an incredibly long jail term or a huge fine. In jail you would probably lose a lot of ability, so it might be worth reloading the older save anyway.
In the manual, I believe it says that the bounties will carry over from town to town, so all guards will probably attack you and most commoners won't want to deal with you.
I hope it works out - It sucks to lose that much time. Reminds me of the night I spent three hours selling all my spare potions across four cities, then went to bed in exhaustion when Morrowind crashed to desktop. In the morning I discovered my little brother had saved over my game:mad: AHHH!

if your on the xbox version just join the theives guild and talk to someone about a price on your head. they will tell u who to talk to but before you get that guy to remove your bounty drop all but one coin on the ground in front of him. then tell him to remove your bounty and he will for the price he said but it will only take the one coin from you. then you pick up your money and go on your way! i guess its a glitch but it should work for you.
