I used to play UW1+2 on my old computer and they worked fine. Now that Ive got a new PIII with all the rest, I cant play them anymore. Im getting an error message to the effect of 'Cd tray is not closed properly' which is simply not true. I figured that my last cd-drive was 4 speed and my new cd-drive is 50 speed so that is most probably the problem. Is there a way around this?

Build in your old CD drive into your new computer.

You should be able to run Underworld directly off your hard drive. The manual that came with my UUW 1+2 CD contained instructions for doing just that...
Bring up a DOS prompt
If d: is your CD-ROM drive, and you want to copy the UW2 directory to c:\ then type:
xcopy d:\uw2 c:\uw2 /e /s
When it's done, go to c:\UW2 and type 'uinstall' to configure the game.
If it doesn't detect your sound hardware, run 'uwsound' immediately after exiting the 'uinstall' program, and manually enter the required values.
(If you're doing all this in Windows, you may be able to check out your sound hardware via the control panel -- Look for the SB16 emulation under 'Creative Miscellaneous Devices' if you have a SB Live)
Works just fine for me. Good luck!

Mmmmmm.... Underworld.....
I first played UUW *long* after they were released. I didn't have a PC back then (I had a BBC Micro! Yay! :)
I think I'd probably played System Shock, Terra Nova, and Quake 2 first. And guess what? Ultima Underworld absolutely rocked.
Yes they're old, but they were also way ahead of their time. That certainly doesn't mean they look _pretty_ by today's standards, but it does mean that with a little effort you can overlook their age and enjoy the awesome game underneath.
