Yeah. It's a lot better to go and kill someone in their manor. The Ald-Rhun Manor's are extremely worth it for size (the ones inside the giant crab shell thing in the north part of town), but if you're looking for something closer to home, try the center Manor in Balmora (up on the north-west past of town.) I think the owner is already dead.
Ghorak Manor is good because Creeper is there, but you do need one of those Orc's for a quest to obtain Goldbrand (a powerful artifact.)

[Bloodmoon, Tribunal spoilers]
My favorite home -- the "Blodskal" house in the Skaal village. Man, I love that place! Not fancy, but it's like your own little ski cabin in the woods. Very cozy. Not much storage space, but I use my room in Thirsk to store stuff I know I'm not going to need often. I cast "Mark" in the Blodskal house for when I want to get back there, and then Almsivi Intervention gets you all the way back to Gnisis, or Barilzar's Mazed Band if you want to reach Vivec or get back to Mournhold.

I know the strongholds dont do much but its more satisfying to have one officially made for you. Ive taken over loads of places (including the miners home due to the fact that i killed him and ruined my chances of expanding the stronghold lol!)
Strongholds arent that useless tho, for 5000 you get an ebony lonhsword and lots of other stuff for free so you do get lots of stuff and a place to leave ur loot. I dunno...oh well i guess i wont be getting a cool wall around my stronghold...

Sorry this is a little off topic, but how do you cure the Kwama queen?

There's a guy in Gnisis who sells scrolls for 'Cure Blight on Other.' He has his own house, but I'm not sure where it is in Gnisis. You just cast that spell on the Queen.
