HELP... does this game run inDirect 3d? - by hayaku

Ok, ive played this game through at least 10 times, on three separate rigs and over 4 video cards. Only the last one (this one) has started giving me trouble.
It is on a Core 2 Duo E6000 / 8800gts 640mb rig running Vista 64. Thing is, when I play it on D3D I get all screwed up colors, everything looks dark and green. This only seems to apply to textures, sprites and models all seem to be fine its just wall textures and stuff that get all messed up. Menu's, including the rotating DX symbol intro etc are all fine.
The only way I can get it working nice is running Open GL, which is generally quite good but gets all strange when light is removed, a problem I suspect is with the shadowing.
Are there any known issues getting this game to play in D3D on a 8800gts card??
thanks.

Just wondering, could your troubles be related to the operating system rather than the video card?

Yeah well, no idea, thats what I was trying to find out though...
If its Vista thats the problem I will make myself a nice dual boot with my old XP OEM. Hope that works...
otherwise it might be the graphics card. Anybody else here run DX on an 8800gts?
Also I am running Direct X 10 which might complicate things a little.
Hmm...

DirectX 10 shouldn't be a problem, as the package contains three renderers, D3D10, D3D9Ex and the good ol' D3D9 that we know so well in XP.

I've run DX on Core2 Duo E6420/8800 GTS 640MB/Vista. My Vista is 32 bit, though, so my graphics drivers may be different to yours. Plus I run in XP compatibility mode: right-click on the DX icon in Games and select Customize, then select Edit and then the Compatibility tab.

Just tried XP SP2 comparability mode, changed nothing.
For the record this is a screenshot of what I get when running in D3D. Contrast and brightness adjusted to highlight the effects. Note the grainy textures and strange hues of green blue and purple on anything dark.
For the record, all 3D models and their textures, ie paul denton and ammo crates etc are 100% fine it just seems to be the actual wall, sky and floor textures at fault.
Looks fine in Open GL except for generally diminished quality effects and of course, a sense of graininess for shadows and all things dark (from memory this is an unavoidable aspect of Open GL rendered unreal engine, always got it in theif)
So, any ideas??

Oh, and interestingly enough (looks more obvious in-game) but when you use the flashlight on any surface, it looks completely normal. This corruptions from what I can tell is only caused by presence of shadow or darkness, which is just about everywhere, after all this game is set at night!!

You need to set textures to 32bit in the options. This cured the dithering issue for me (Direct3D driver).
Note: Thief2 also has major problems with dithering but in Thief2 you don't have the option to force 32bit textures as you do in DX.

Oh wow that just fixed it. Strange, I always kept setting it to 32 bit and it never changed anything. Maybe it kept force resetting back to 16 bit? I am not sure.
Anyway seems to be good now, fingers crossed. Ill see how it goes.
thanks
