I wish to back up XP's (x64) Documents and Settings but each time I try I always get write-protect errors. I've tried doing it from safe mode, I've tried doing it from my XP32 installation running in dual boot (normal and safe modes).
How do I get around this?
Having to reformat partitions, reinstall Windows, create slipstreamed install discs is annoying enough as it is (The PC shop technician told me that Windows doesn't like motherboard swaps.).
Thanks in advance.

Hi there
What are you trying to accomplish..? a full backup of the hard drive or just your documents and settings..?
With regards to permissions, all you need to do is log in with local admin account and give the group "everyone" full reed/write permissions on the user folder you wihs to migrate. But also be aware you cant copy/migrate an account if your logged in with the same account (have to be logged in as local admin)

Just Docs and Settings, the registry (to get games up and running again without reinstallation) and some apps.
All my "vital stuff" is on my storage partitions.
To set permissions, do I have to turn simple file sharing off?

Technically, you might not have to, but I would reinstall windows and all apps with a motherboard swap. Unless you don't have media or CD Keys, backing up that registry info will likely cause more problems then it will save in time.
this is merely my opinion and practice, but I've seen the side affects of this time saver and it usually forces a reinstall anyway shortly thereafter.
Just trying to help.

What huckeye said
Can we assume your replacing a major peice of hardware..? if so just reinstall windows etc.
If you looking to backup setting for certains programs I can help you with that.

I was planning to back up the registry and pull individual entries from it (to get games working) as needed, not restore the entire thing.

ah thats easy - in fact thats whay I do, so I dont have to reinstall all my games when I rebuild my pc ever few months.
The way I did it was to look for the publisher of the game (eg 'ion storm' for T3), this game had 2 entries, one for the installer and the second for other misc settings/paths etc. ive done the same thing for Stalker:CS, Oblivion and Mass Effect.
