I am in the Goblin Prison and have completed the Spider Cave. How do I get out? A walkthru says I exit at the northern end but the path is barred. I did find one button nearby but it do4es not do anything. What am I Missing? Thanks

Search the Goblin Lords' body to find a piece of wood. You can use this on the slot on the wall to open the portcullis.
B.t.w. try not to rely on the walkthrough too much :). One of the really fun things about this game is the exploration factor.

I have searched every dead Goblin Lord on the level without finding the piece of wood. The only wood I found was in the Spider cave and I used it there to get back to the prison level. Any thoughts?

So, do you mean that you have spoken to Kultar for the second time (after defeating a goblin lord together)? That Goblin has the stick that allows you to re-enter the prison. That is the only stick that you need.
From what I can gather, you're already in the prison, so I had misunderstood your question. Once you've defeated that Goblin with Kultar and entered the prison by going up the stairs, follow the left wall until you get to a corridor to your left. Go left and follow this passage completely to the end. At the end is a staircase that exits the prison.
An old trick if your lost is to pick a wall and follow it, because eventually it will always lead to an exit.
