Ok, so you can headshot people in the first games. But there's still a huge difference between it and "Headshot!"'
Well, I dispute that. An optional pop-up doesn't make a huge difference to what just happened. And anyways, seems like there are some actual issues with Thief, not just ephemera like UI pop-ups, according to both RPS and Sneaky Bastards.

Maybe the new Thief will have a third person guard bumping animation to keep the ghosters happy :cheeky:
Do what to his leg? :)

Because when I shoot a bitch in the head in those games, that bitch is instantly dead.
I don't remember any dogs in those games. Are you talking about women?

It's a reward, a pat on the back, if you will.

oh my god Fett hates women AND doesn't know anything about Thief, why do I even come here?
Starker, is there a huge difference between shooting an arrow into someones head and them dying and shooting an arrow into someones head and them dying and a thing you will definitely have turned off anyway saying 'you shot that guy in the head'. This is one of those cases where you either splutter about it because of the implied lack of dedication to the non-violent route in Thief (which as the discussion in hand is demonstrating, has always been optional in Thief. You could very much murder everyone if you wanted), or you just kind of shrug and turn it off and have exactly the same game mechanic.

It's a word on the screen. If you want to make it into some metaphysical incentive to kill, that's your business. Just turn it off already. Problem solved.
I also assume you have a problem with SECRET FOUND! in the originals because why would you need an on-screen notification for anything? You're picking hairs out of your bum at this point. ;)
edit: Also, even without the notification, I feel a huge pat on the back when I kill women. In Thief, I mean.

The Thief games strongly incentivized non-violent play by making the non-violent solution - blackjack to the head - an unlimited resource.
Mines? Arrows? Those things run out. Players don't want to waste a limited resource, so they'll only use it if they absolutely can't get the unlimited resource to work.
Do players run out of Sword too? It's just as unlimited as the blackjack and it even works after the guard is alerted.

It's not saying "you shot that guy in the head". It's saying "Headshot!".

If you're already up close and personal with a guard, why not use the blackjack instead of the sword? It's quieter.
Unless of course the guard is alerted, in which case you ARE using up a limited resource - your health, because the guard is kicking your ass.

Hmm... I think one thing needs to be made clear. It is not "the issue" for me. It's "an issue".
