Just today I remembered how TDP does exactly NOT explain to you the sneaky tools of your trade in the tutorial (despite being the training ground for a super-secretive society). This is why I at that time (with the CD from some random magazine) didn't know how to use the blackjack at all when I started.
This.
I was a bit naive when I played TDP for the first time (when it was a brand new game), and I didn't even know what the word "blackjack" meant in the context. I saw a little black lump and ignored it completely. I'm pretty sure I had to read about KOs on Thief - The Circle to even know they were possible. I did shoot a lot of dudes in the head until I found out I had an alternative.

I didn't read about it online and in fact had very little net access at the time. So how I found out how to use the blackjack when you chaps struggled remains a mystery to me.

Maybe you read the instruction manual, like I did. People used to do that in those days.

Question: What do the XP points earn you in a real-world sense? Anything? I don't know, obviously, because I don't pay attention to that sort of thing.

I remember reading it while the game installed. The install screens also had all kinds of tips which are sadly lacking in the GOG version.

It's compulsive and watching numbers get bigger gives you a sense of progress. Have you never played Diablo?

That's a good point, I'm pretty sure I would have read the manual.
It might be just the Bafford demo that I'm thinking of, actually. I did play it many times before getting the full game (I asked my parents for it for Christmas in 1998 after playing the demo).

Right, but you actually leveled up in Diablo, didn't you? I think I'm getting a little sick thinking about my Level 18 Garrett with his +4 blackjack and his +5 Focus.

Pretty sure they haven't let on yet, but there are some sort of upgrades to Garrett. I'm a bit nervous about what they'll be. Hopefully they'll mainly be upgrades to focus, but we'll see ...

Higher jumping, wall running, multiple opponent takedowns, quiet when running.
And so on.

"Congrabulations! You've scored 50 headshots in a row, and have now unlocked the BFG9000".
WHAT'S THIS CRAP? THIS DOES NOT APPEAL TO MY STEALTH BASED SENSE OF SUPERIORITY!
