I went over my original post again, and in no way can it be reasonably construed to have the meaning "it is illegal for a store to demand the permission to search you, because otherwise it'd be an unlawful search"
Quote Posted by hopper
If something is illegal, any clause in an agreement that you sign doesn't make it legal. Instead, because it's illegal, such a clause would be invalid from the moment you signed it. . . . What's illegal, is for the store to require you to let them search your property.
If you didn't explain yourself well thats your problem so don't try to put this shit on me.

I find it depressing that people like you and fett have gotten so used to pulling down your pants and handing the system a tube of lube that you can't help but demonize the actions of those who unconditionally stand up for their rights, however minor said rights might be.
What the fuck are you on about Stitch?
BRAWL!!! BRAWL!!! BRAWL!!!
I've said FOUR times that I think the guy was right in principal. That doesn't mean he's not a prick for the place and time he chose to make his OH SO BRAVE grandstand agains the "system" (Circuit City - a retail store is now "the system"? Gods help you guys if you ever get truly persectued. Jesus fucking Christ). I've had my ass thrown out of a fucking DHS office by cops because I refused to obey the rent-a-cop's order to sit instead of stand, AND been taken into custody because I refused a sobriety test outside of a fucking bar - not driving. I'm not handing anybody a tube of lube, but I'll share the subtle difference between myself and your retail manager fighting man of steel. I DIDN'T FUCKING POST ABOUT IT IN MY GAY INTERNET BLOG SO EVERYBODY WOULD THINK I WAS A HERO*. Does that not say ANYTHING to ANYBODY about this guy's character?
Bottom line - the guy did the right thing at the wrong time with the store, and the right thing at the wrong time with the cops. He's correct, but he was being a prick. Like a few people in this thread. ;)
*Except now I have. Let the revolution begin. FUCK.

You know, I don't appreciate being called a coward by RBJ, and I don't appreciate Stitch assuming he knows enough about me to make that grotesque remark about "lube." It's too bad some people can't argue a point without resorting to personal attacks.
Dear god woman, I haven't even begun to break out the personal attacks so drop the wounded victim charade. I'm only working with what you're giving me.
fett: okay you're off the hook but that's some THIN ICE you're treading

Heh. (
http://www.michaelrighi.com/2007/09/05/papers-please-arrested-at-circuit-city-followup-1/) In an update, this guy is serious about defending his rights, remortgaging his house in an attempt to drum up the cash for legal costs to take it to the Hague.
Most interestingly though is the following comment:
Quote:
If anybody is still confused about why I choose to live my life based on principles, I recommend that you read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.
Just a very sophisticated BioShock 2 marketing shill?
Is the shopper at Circuit City not entitled to the sweat of his brow?!
Spaztick on 11/9/2007 at 08:16
I couldn't get through the Fountainhead. The characters themselves were nothing but extensions of philosophical ideals, not characters with personality, a true background or even motives behind their actions; you could've replace their names with Nihilist, Objectivist and Socialist and I probably wouldn't have blinked an eye. I know every (epic) story out there consists of a clash of ideals and truth be told the story itself is interesting, but I found it drowned in philosophy and imagery. The book wasn't too long since I don't base a book on length, but I found it too descriptive, which is funny because it clashes with the fact that the character's aren't developed when you begin the book, they're developed as you read. I don't hate the book, I just didn't enjoy reading it. It would make an excellent movie (as I see it's been made into one) since those 5 pages of reading how the granite quarry was described could be summed up in 20 seconds of film.

But why? There are lots of principled people who are assholes. Not the point of the thread but it's a distinction I don't think everyone's getting. I just don't believe his motivation had anything to do with his rights, I think it has to do with blog fodder and getting attention.
Now he's going to court and quoting Ayn Rand? If he REALLY wants to make a heroic stand for civil rights, there are about a million ways to do it that don't purposefully draw attention to himself. :tsktsk:

If there was a misunderstanding, it could have been sorted out the normal way, in a civil discussion. Now I'm not saying it's your fault that this didn't happen.

I may have been whining but it wasn't a charade; I actually felt hurt. (I'm really quite fragile.) And I'm NOT WEARING PANTIES! Stop making assumptions! ;)
