Bought my dad a blu ray player, need help setting it up.
Here's the situation:
He has an HDTV with two HDMI inputs.
He also has a surround receiver/dvd player, but it only has one HDMI output, one optical in, and no other inputs (it's a cheap one that came with the TV).
He also has an hd cable box, with component/optical output.
Question: if we plug the receiver's HDMI out into the tv's first input, and the blu-ray's HDMI into the TV's second input, can the receiver and the blu-ray interact (ie, surround sound from the blu-ray)? I would use the receiver's optical in for the blu-ray, but I need it for the cable box. Can two separate HDMIs work together for sound and video? Or do I need to buy an HDMI switch box?

Actually, I think I need an optical cable splitter, then connect both the blu-ray and cable box sound through optical.

Indeed...
if anyone's wondering I ended up getting one of (
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=247076&Sku=C184-27027) these -- it'll split the incoming signal from the blu-ray (which outputs video only to the tv through HDMI, audio through optical), and from the cable box into the single input on the receiver. Only catch is that no signal goes through if both are running at once, but that's actually not so bad -- rather than lean over and turn a physical switch, I just shut off one of the devices by remote.
