They're about the same price, which is more bang for the buck? Keep in mind that I *don't* overclock my stuff.
I used to use tom's hardware for comparison, but they're gone down the shitter lately.

Go for the 8800GT, if you can find both for about the same price (around here the GT is a bit more expensive). It beats the 3870 in most benchmarks. The latter is theoretically more futureproof, with Shader Model 4.1 and DX10.1, but that is usually a moot point, as when there are actually enough games to support those modes, the card will most probably be hopelessly outdated.

Hi chaps
or better still go for the HD4850 that smashes both the 8800Gt and the 3870 for around the same money..

There'll always be a better board just around the corner, so by all means wait for the 4xxx series if you want, ATM the 8800GT beats the 3870 hands down but make sure you go for the 512 Mb one the 256mb 8800s are a waste of money.

Except that the 4850 is out WITHIN THE NEXT WEEK and is clearly now the best bang for buck, mid-range card of choice. On par with (and slightly beating in some cases) the more expensive Geforce 9800GTX.

I do indeed stand corrected. Just read the review of the 4850 on Anandtech and it looks like it seriously rocks.
It also looks like it can be had for as low as $150 in the right places and even more remarkable 2 of them can (most of the time) outperform the GTX 260.
Although I'd wait a week or 2 because the 4870 is just around the corner, considering the 4850 is on par with the 9800 GTX this should be a fantastic card. Plus prices on existing cards are likely to get slashed in the next while.

That's exactly what I hate when I'm shopping for computer parts. There's always one hot thing that's going out each week, putting last week to shame.
