I have to get a new phone, too, having fucked up my Samsung Trace while cleaning it: I was wiping it down with 90% alcohol and some of it seeped into the phone and basically shorted out the display and some of the number keys. :( Long story short, I ended up losing my temper and punched the phone while I was holding it. Bending it like that did
not restore full functionality to the device and so it's time for new comms gear.
I'm on a T-Mobile prepaid plan because I only use the phone for when I have to speak with someone and I'm not at home or work. They don't carry any phones I want, so I'm going to go with the (

I've been using a SanDisk Sansa 2gb for my mp3 player and I'm pretty happy with it, but I'm thinking about getting one of the new Sony Walkman line, probably the (

Ive got a Sansa Clip 2gig that I bought for the gym, but since my n95 died I've been using it as both gym and main mp3 player - its a brilliant little fucker.
Anyway, been reading alot about the HTC HD2 and to be honest, my initial holy shit reaction has been tempered by the fallout over Windows Mobile 6.5 and how it seems HTC have just put a large paperbag over it and used their own fancier software as an overlay with WM6.5 underneath it, rearing its head like a bad smell. Plus the music player gets kicked to shit on the reviews and if i'm getting a phone like that then its a poor show if it cant do everything i want it to.
So I've been reading about the HTC Hero - what a spritley little phone this seems to be! The Android OS has me curious, but ive never used it. However it seems really appealing and i always dig the open-source anything.
Oh yeah, best plan is to buy a phone outright and go on a low contract with an operator to get lots of texts, calls and unlimited web. Nice thing about London too - lots of wifi hotspots!
So- thoughts on the HTC Hero and Android? I do have a question - since Android is Open Source; when THE MIGHTY GOOGLE release (say) Android 3.0 - is it just a simple upgrade on the same phone?

wtf did I tell you before about Win Mobile? :tsktsk:
I'm not even answering your Android query as you won't listen. Google it, that'll make you happier.

Hug?
Ok, I'm now on your side - I wandered into Orange yesterday and spent a good 10min playing with Android. Fantastic OS.

Didn't T-Mobile and Orange merge recently over there?
SubJeff on 2/12/2009 at 22:09
Yes but no. Its not complete yet afaik. Orange will honour my contract though so, er, Droid here I come.

Yeah so I never got the Droid.
Why not? Oh, just the small issue of the Google Nexus One coming out in a few days. And then there is the other version of the Droid sans keyboard but with some other stuff.
It strikes me that we are the same place with mobile phones as we were with PCs about 5 years ago - the minute you got one something new and better was around the corner. I don't do the keeping up with the Joneses thing (which I why I still have a crappy Blackberry Pearl) but sometimes tech gets old really quick, like my Pearl.
2010 will be the year of the Phone Wars I reckon, and Apple (damn them) have outfoxed everyone in having a great product that I doubt will be bested, especially as I'm sure they have a newer and better iteration around the corner.
