I don't have an aiFown yet I'm still posting in this here thread. Eat that, biatch!
I'm waiting for the usual Christmas rush when all providers outbid each other with more and more stuff for the same cost. Then I'll finally get me a smartphone... I just can't decide between the Samsung Omina II aka i8000 and the HTC HD2. Daymn, does the latter have a big ass 4.3" screen, compared to the iPhone. Also fairly decent multitouch and all the usual goodies. On the other hand the Omnia has a 3.7" screen, but this one's AMOLED, ohshi-ohshi-ohshi! Both are using Windows Mobile 6.5, which is supposed to be quite a bit more responsive than the older versions. The HTC UI seems a bit more polished than the Omnia's, which also doesn't support multitouch (IIRC). The HTC has a capacitive (iPhone-ish) screen, while the Omnia has a resistive one... which I wouldn't mind at all if they'd had included a stylus AND a slot to hide it in and not have it dangle around like a broken limb.
I'm yet to see one of them in a local shop though, and I'd like to test them a bit first, especially how well they'll (not) fit in my pocket. Seriously, why can't they just make them say 7cm long and 3.5cm wide (but keep the big ass 3.7"/4.3" screens, of course)

all the add-ons such as cameras and Internet and GPS and built-in kettles and the likes just seem more like trivial gimmicks to me as opposed to vital additions.
I think the way all these applications - internet, gaming, gps, music, communications, camera - are converging in single handheld devices is pretty fantastic.

You also don't have that great reading comprehension. I hear GBM is doing Xmas specials on lessons. Snap it up if I were you.
Chimpy - I totally agree. Now. I used to think all this unification was pretty meh, but the more advanced the tech gets the more I'm liking it. I'm just impatient and want the handheld device of all-doing-doom!

I remember when people used to buy a mobile to make actual phone calls; all the add-ons such as cameras and Internet and GPS and built-in kettles and the likes just seem more like trivial gimmicks to me as opposed to vital additions.
There are people who remember when you had to call a switchboard and ask to be connected to "IM2-3425" in order to make phone calls, but that doesn't mean that you don't have a PC in your home to connect to the internet.
Like Chimpy and SE said, mobile convergence is pretty f'n cool, especially when the mere act of (

How's the mp3 player on Droid RBJ? Reviews don't rate it highly. I really want an Android app phone but I'd much perfer a good all rounder.
The MP3 player is pretty crap, but on two different levels.
One, as I've already said, the lack of any sort of hardware controls, which makes any MP3 player less efficient. But I knew that going in, so I can't really complain about it now, can I?
On the software side though, most of the "poor mp3 player" complaints revolve around "It doesn't sync with iTunes, wah!" which to me is a good thing, since I fucking hate being handheld for everything by iTunes. I actually want drag and drop control (you know, so I can copy things FROM the phone as well?). And if you really really have to have iTunes, it's trivial to get a plug in to let you sync with it. Has been for every major music player for years.
The real problem is the software player on the phone itself, which no reviewer seems to actually be mentioning (probably because most reviewers are lowest-common-denominator idiots in an echo chamber who can't get past iTunes - it's equivalent to reviewing an electric car, complaining that you can't go to a gas station with it, and never bothering to tell us about the battery).
The player on the phone is serviceable at best. It's clunky at sorting things and doesn't have nearly as many options as I'd like. A little advance planning with playlists takes some of the pain away, but it definitely needs work.
That said, I'm not worried or bothered by this, because it's a stopgap, and anyone with a brain knows this. I'd be totally pissed if this was the only music player ever available, but it won't be. The best mobile app I've ever had for a phone was a WinAmp clone on my P910 5 years ago, and Symbian had a fraction of the developers working on it that Android does. Now that there's a big push for the Droid and the Eclair OS, I'm sure that app development will open up and it won't be too long before a good MP3 app emerges - whether it's a Google upgrade or 3rd party. I'm putting the over/under on a top notch MP3 player at weeks, rather than months.

I get you on the hardware controls thing but for my phone this doesn't bother me. I'd only bother if I were to use it at the gym for mp3s and I have a Shuffle for that.
I suppose the Android dev posse will bring forth a multitude of mp3 players, yes.
But it looks like no provider is going to have Droid in this ass backwards country anyway. I may have to import one and ask if Orange will let me use my unlimited monthly data DLs with it. Can you frikking believe it?
Edit: can't get it anywhere in the UK, not even on ebay. :(

Oh I'm not claiming otherwise. You guys are totally right: it
is pretty damn clever how they manage to fit all these things in nowadays, and it does impress me. I guess I'm just saying that - for me personally - I have no need for them because I already have other things that fufill their purpose; I don't need a phone that can take pictures or video clips because I already have a camera, I don't need a phone that can play MP3 because I already have an MP3 player, I don't need a phone that can access the Internet because I already have a PC, and so forth. These things do what they're supposed to and fulfil my needs just fine, so why get something else that won't offer me anything new?
Again, technology is a marvel, and I do respect the achievements they make with mobiles these days, but I'm already catered for with what I have. Of course I'm sure plenty of people (probaby the vast majority, in fact) disagree with me, and that's fair enough. I'm not trying to sway anybody's opinions, just trying (and probably too hard! :cheeky: ) to voice my own.
You know what? I really
don't know how the hell I got here! Can somebody show me the way out of here, please? This is really starting to scare me now... :wot:

I too have a separate phone, camera and mp3 player so I see where you are coming from.
The thing with these app phones is they have stuff that is specific to you individually as well as having some integrated devices. Some people like to have the Google maps app for example(I've been lost in Birmingham trying to find a restaurant when someone in the group used his iPhone to navigate us on foot), I personally want an app phone because I want to develop a logbook app for work. I need access to my emails at all times too so yes I need net access on the phone (using the work computers is just not feasible because of what I do). I'm not fussed about Facebook or Twitter but if you are... I also don't have SatNav in the car, and even when I get the new car in a few months if I can get the non-SatNav version because I have GPS on the Droid I'll be able to spend the saving on getting the cream leather interior (black ice cream paint job of course). If I'm on a train then yes I like to be able to browse the net, post insults on here, send and receive emails, call people and so on.

Or as I always tend to say on these things, get the football scores on the 16th green so you can report to everyone in the clubhouse on how their team did that day.

Phones allowed on the golf course? How uncouth!
