If you have an installer package, it's as simple as drag and drop to get it onto the card and then install. But for most apps, installing from the appstore is easy and painless, no need to muck around with your pc at all.
It's easy to fill your onboard memory with apps, so eventually installing it TO the SD will be appealing to you, just file faf's advice away for now though, hopefully app2sd becomes a feature by the time you need it.
And yeah, there are definitely .CBR apps, but I don't recall the names right now. it's a quick search in the appstore if I recall.

Fafhrd - the unlocked phones we have here in the UK aren't rooted I don't think. All Nexus Ones are unlocked anyway and any phone you buy out of contract will be unlocked. But it's unlikely they will be rooted.
Are you sure rooting is such a good idea? I haven't bothered because, well, I don't think there is anything I need a rooted phone for atm. Installing apps to the SD card isn't on my list (yet) and if Android 2.2 will have it soon anyway I'd rather do it "legit".
As for .cbr apps - Droid Comic Viewer will suit you a treat I think.
Now that there are a few of us on Android when fonz and Stitch have got used to their new phones we're going to need to have a serious app chat. :)

I rooted my G1 a week after I got it, but it's probably less necessary for the N1 and Desire/Incredible. The ability to install custom ROMs that potentially run faster than stock, plus boot images that let you do full system back-ups, development SPLs that'll allow you to ADB push stuff directly into the system partition, plus the other nitty gritty system access it gets you is pretty handy though. I'm actually surprised you
haven't rooted your N1, weren't you planning to do some app development? I thought root access was pretty much a pre-requisite for that.

The app I wanted to develop has been catered for. Besides, getting the dev suite working proved to be failure nightmare.

I'm a little bit concerned by this talk of the battery life on the Desire. Don't get me wrong I am very very excited to get this thing in my hands (which should be Monday all being well).
Whats the process with these? Charge it full for 8+ hours at the mains and don't touch it then let it run down? My understanding from reading the Android/Desire forums is that the battery improves over time with folks generally getting a full 1.5 or even 2 days usage out of before charging with medium usage. I do tend to plug my phone into the charger at night though since I also use it as my alarm clock. But still - whats the process.
Also, you guys who use Dropbox - theres an App just released last week. I for one will most definitely be getting that badboy installed as soon as I get it up and running!

Just charge it as normal. Charge is supposed to improve over a week.
Nexus One battery lasts a day at best with medium to heavy use. Desire is supposed to have a much better battery. Its much heavier for sure.
Yeah, got Dropbox.

Can the Desire be used as an ebook reader also? I have a few .mobi, .txt, .doc and .pdf books i've collected over the years that sure would be handy to read on it!

There's something about the relationship between people and their phones these days that makes 'Rooting your Desire' appropriate in a number of ways.

Of course. You can read anything on it if the format is supported.
There is a free book app (I forget the name) which has a library of classics to read for free. The problem is I don't think the screen is great for extended reading times. It's not that the text is small or the screen is poor but that its not really made for reading like the Kindle and whatnot so you'll be heading for project: eyestrain.
Interesting dj_ivocha. I hadn't read that review. I'd heard from Desire owners that they had different batteries. Wonder why it's so much heavier then. In any case I'm looking for an aftermarket battery for my Nexus as the stock one is wanting a little.
App chat
Has anyone who is using Android found a nice app killer? I'm using Advanced Task Killer atm and I've tried TasKiller (which seems to be highly regarded and pimped on sites like Lifehacker/Gizmodo) but didn't get on with it.
ATK is ok but I'd like to be able to set auto-kill for specific apps, or at least have it kill apps that I'm not using. Even on the "Crazy" auto-kill setting some background apps start up. I know it's "clever" use dependent and opens things that I'll need but I want to be able to auto-kill them all without having to go into the ATK menu.
If you're looking for some good apps Gizmodo has microsite for Android apps: (

Apart from the ones that look like they'd be US based (like Aloqa) I already had most of these. Its a good place to start for general apps. Also check out Lifehacker's Top 10s - they regularly have a list of high quality Android apps.
I love the QR code scan that takes you to the app on the market. Does iPhone have this?
