I'm pretty sure it's carrier specific. GSM carriers like AT&T and T-mobile use SIM cards, but I think Verizon and Sprint are CDMA and don't. Somebody with Verizon or Sprint feel free to correct me on that.

So if I buy a HTC Desire unlocked here in the uk and then goto Australia with it - can I just simply hammer in a Simcard on a data/calls/sms tariff over there and it'll all work hunkydory?
Somewhat daft question I know but still...

In theory it'd work, since I'm pretty sure that Australia's GSM carriers are on the same frequency as Britain, but you'd have to confirm that. The sim cards shouldn't be a problem on an unlocked phone though - I used to swap in local international sim cards all the time when I traveled with no issues.
(And Fafhrd's right: Verizon = CDMA = no sim card.)

My current (6-year-old, falling-apart) phone is Sprint and it does not use a sim card.
I'll look into it.

Picked it up for £399 on play.com. Totally worth every penny and I dont like being tied to a 24 month contract at £35 odd quid a month. This way I can stay on my £15 a month awesome tariff I have with 02 and get the phone!
I think with the added benefit that it will be usable when i move to Australia since its quad band aswell. I was playing with it in the local carphone warehouse today and its a gorgeous piece of machinery. Really looking forward to it - ETA: should have it by this friday.

You could have got it cheaper from me. And a Nexus is £360 from the US.
also what happened to the windows 7 mobile love?

Thanks for the offer, but its been dispatched today from play.com so should have it all being well by Saturday.
I've just totally fallen in love with Android and I love how completely customisable it is. Like I said, played with the Desire for a while and everything about it screams what I'm after in my phone.
Plus, lets face it - these days ones mobile phone is always on them so it should do everything you'd need in the daily slog. Sense UI makes me feel funny and the phone itself just felt right.
I had a chance to have a go on a Nexus One today at work and i much prefer HTC's design over it. The buttons at the bottom on the Desire I found myself using quite alot and the Nexus just looked cheaper for some reason. I like my phone to have a bit of weight and the Desire did just that.
Two questions though:
* I have an 8gb HD SD Card which I plan on hammering into the Desire; how do I put apps/games on it to install? On that note I'm assuming putting video and music is just a drag and drop? I prefer not having to install shit software on my laptop.
* Is there a comic book reader for .cbr files in Android? Like Comical which I use on my computer?
Will give more detailed thoughts when I get the damn thing.

As of now the phone will need to be rooted (which presumably it is, being unlocked and all) and you'll need to install a custom ROM that allows apps2SD (check the (
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=628) XDA Desire forums for the ROMs, and directions for rooting the phone if it isn't already. There's a chance the Desire ROMs with apps2SD won't have Sense, though.) The SD card will also need to have an ext2 or 3 partition on it. Rumour is that Google has an official apps2SD solution coming, possibly in 2.2/froyo, but that probably won't be out for a couple more months.

Yes.
[edit]Waitaminnit. By 'put apps/games on it to install' do you mean just placing them on the SD card and installing them to the phone's memory, or having the apps actually install to the SD card? For the latter, see above. For the former it's as simple as dragging and dropping the .apk files to the phone, navigating to it with a file manager app (Astro is the best one I know of) selecting it and installing it. Be sure to check the 'Unknown Sources' option in Application Settings first.

Perfect! Very helpful dude, thanks. I just mean installing from the sd card, not installing to the sd card.
