i bought this cross bow from the hlaau plaza place and i dunno what ammo it uses
i tried steel arrow
chitin arrow
iron arrow
and this magical arrow and it still doesnt work

Crossbows use bolts, not arrows. Bolts are a lot more expensive, but also a lot more damaging.
Crossbows are my favorite weapon. Helped keep me alive a lot in the earlly game.

Most weapon stores. I usually get mine in Balmora. Exit the Mages or Fighters Guild. Go left towards the Temple. It'll be on your left directly under the footbridge.
